My parents recently passed away and I found some t'fillin (Jewish religious item) that were custom made for me by my ultra-Orthodox Hasidic relatives shortly after my Bar-Mitzvah when I briefly lived in England. I have been secular for many years now. I consider myself reform/conservative but the t'fillin I have were made under stringent guidelines. (the scribe was contracted and did painstakingly accurate caligraphy for example). At the time, (it was the year 1980) I remember my father paying my cousin $500 for these t'fillin. They have been used maybe 2 or 3 times since my Bar-Mitzvah and come in a beautiful blue velvet bag.
