In 1939, when he was 8 years old, his family fled to China to escape Nazi persecution. The family lived in Tientsin, China, until 1948, when they moved to Baltimore. Rena Rotenberg, a Jewish early childhood educator, has served the community as a teacher, director, and consultant. She has taught early childhood education courses at Baltimore Hebrew College, Stevenson University, BCCC, and CCBC. In addition, she has written curriculum material for Jewish preschools and primary schools and is a co-author of two early childhood teaching guides: Lively Legends, Jewish Values and Torah Talk. As a childbirth educator at Baltimore's Center for Jewish Education, she started a program called “In the Beginning: A Jewish Lamaze Experience” (later renamed as “Shalom Baby” and “Lamazal Tov”). Rena was educated at Brooklyn College and Hunter College and earned an M.A. degree from Baltimore Hebrew College. The program is free for paid members and $5 for non-members (applied to membership fee when a visitor joins JGSMD) after their first meeting. Refreshments will be available. Please check our web site at www.jgsmd.org for late updates and for the time, location, and program of future meetings.
