Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon reportedly attacked the House investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election as an attempt to delegitimize President Trump’s election during his testimony on Tuesday. Rep. Tom Rooney, one of the top Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, told Politico that Bannon made the remark during his ten-plus hour testimony before the committee. The former Trump strategist blasted the committee’s investigation as an attempt to “decertify the last election,” according to Rooney. Read more at The Hill.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Tuesday called out President Trump for his “unrelenting attacks” on the press in an op-ed for The Washington Post, saying he’s aiding dictators worldwide by putting the crosshairs on journalists. “Whether Trump knows it or not,” McCain wrote, his constant cry of “fake news” directed at “reporters and news outlets whose coverage he disagrees with” is being used by repressive regimes to crack down on the media. Referencing a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, McCain noted that 21 instances of journalists being charged for “fake news” were recorded in 2017. “The phrase ‘fake news’—granted legitimacy by an American president—is being used by au...
The low-cost airline will now allow passengers to bring carry-ons on flights to and from Israel. Previous policy had excluded only Israel. Ireland's low-cost airline Ryanair has reversed its policy forcing passengers flying to and from Israel to pay for check-in bags after detractors accused the company of singling out Israelis. According to the new policy, all customers on Ryanair flights to and from Israeli airports will be permitted to bring two free carry-on bags (one wheelie and one small) to the gate, subject to airport security permitting them to do so. Earlier this week, Ryanair announced a change in its baggage policy in an attempt to free up space in its airplanes overhead bins. According to the new guidelines, passengers without priority boarding would be forced to sto...
Netanyahu visits Mumbai Chabad house rocked by 2008 terror attack with 11-year-old survivor. 'Nobody can defeat the Jewish People.' Rabbi Yisrael Kozlovsky, the Chabad emissary in Mumbai, recounted Prime Minister Netanyahu's emotional visit to the Mumbai Chabad house Moshe Holtzberg, a survivor of a bloody 2008 at the site that killed his parents Rabbi Gavriel and Rivki Holtzberg. Moshe Holtzberg was two years old when Pakistani terrorists stormed the Chabad House on November 26, 2008, murdering six people, including Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who ran the Jewish center. He now lives in Israel with his grandparents. On Tuesday, Moshe made his first visit to Mumbai since the tragedy. Samuel held his hand as the pair, along with Moshe's grandfather, bat...

Believe me Rebbi, I only care about my child’s Yiddishkeit, and if he doesn’t go on the right path then I prefer that he should just die already. - spoken to Harav Aaron Leib Shteinman A father approached the Gadol HaDor known for his wisdom, insight, deep sensitivity and understanding.  The father was fervent in his faith and love for the Jewish people, so much so that he was adamant that if his child did not follow the “right” path he would sooner see him dead.  Wouldn’t the great Rav, recognizing the father’s love of Torah and Hashem, praise the father for this level of piety? No. Rather than see in the father’s judgment something akin to Abraham’s sacrifice of his beloved son in Akedat Yitzchak, the Gadol saw only a bitter, ...
Rav Yaakov Yakir of Israel’s Familism Movement, which was set up to preserve the integrity of the family unit, is fighting attempts to reintroduce the Parents and Their Children Bill which was blocked two year ago. The earlier bill proposed to strike out items of Israel’s Legal Capacity and Guardianship Law (1962) which define parents as children’s legal guardians. The new version of the bill does the same by replacing the legal word “guardianship” in the above law with the non-legal term “parental responsibility.” He warned that this “basically says that the child has his own independent legal rights, and the parents are supposed to implement those rights.” If the bill passes, the Supreme Court could allow a child to sue his parents...
Baltimore, MD, Jan. 18, 2018 — The Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), the largest rabbinic public policy organization in America, today announced a petition drive to preserve traditional standards for prayer at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and to prevent changes at the Holy Site for political reasons. The petition comes in the aftermath of the latest round of Israel Supreme Court hearings on the suit by liberal Jewish groups demanding a larger space at the Western Wall, in which justices questioned whether the groups' demands were exaggerated or unreasonable. "We must make a statement, and we were encouraged by leading Rabbinic scholars and community activists to launch this effort," said Rabbi Pesach Lerner, President of the CJV. "Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Uni...
Pres. Obama attacked press freedom for years. No wonder guys like Jeff Flake loath Trump. He called their bluff. Suddenly Republicans have all the power. For the first time in decades, they could actually do what voters have consistently asked for. But they don’t want to, mostly because their donors don’t want them to.
Two U.S. Representatives from Hawaii have requested a panel hearing to discuss whether the state should remain in charge of sending emergency incoming missile alerts, following a false alarm sent out to people in the state on Saturday. Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (D) and Colleen Hanabusa (D) requested that the House Armed Services Committee holds a hearing in a letter sent Tuesday, suggesting that Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency should retain control of disasters other than incoming missiles, which is a national security issue. Temperatures in the remote, diamond-rich Russian region of Yakutia have dropped to near-record lows, plunging to -67 degrees Centigrade (-88.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas. MOSCOW (AP) — Even thermometers can’t keep up with the plunging temperatures in Russia’s remote Yakutia region, which hit minus 67 degrees Celsius (minus 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas Tuesday. In Yakutia — a region of 1 million people about 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) east of Moscow — students routinely go to school even in minus 40 degrees. But school was canceled Tuesday throughout the region and police ordered parents to keep their children inside. In the village of Oymyakon, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth, state-owned Russian television showed the mercu...
DETROIT –  Among the many shiny models vying for attention at Detroit's North American International Auto Show are the revamped Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai Veloster and Kia Forte. But cars — particularly small ones — are having a tough time getting buyers to look their way as SUVs grow in popularity. Car sales are expected to hit a record low this year after steadily declining for several years. SUVs surpassed cars for the first time in 2016, and the gap only widens: Auto shopping site Edmunds.com forecasts the utilities will make up 43.5 percent of new vehicle sales this year, while cars will fall to 34.5 percent. (Edmunds regularly provides content, including automotive tips and reviews, for distribution by The Associated Press.) The reasons are plenty, inclu...
NEW YORK — Stop making excuses. Start making plans. That's the message behind the second annual National Plan for Vacation Day. It's an effort by the travel industry to persuade Americans to use Jan. 30 as a day to schedule their vacations for the year and take advantage of any paid time off they are entitled to from their jobs. Destinations, tourism agencies and others in the travel industry are expected to offer promotions in conjunction with the effort. It will be promoted on social media with a #PlanForVacation hashtag. Alamo, for example, will publicize vacation-planning tips and offer a 10 percent discount on base rates for weekly car rentals (bookable Jan. 23-Feb. 6, for travel March 1-Aug. 30). Las Vegas is also taking part in the campaign, planning a video show...
BOYNTON BEACH, FLA.  A fourth person has died in Florida after being struck by a new high-speed train. Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said in an email that the train struck 51-year-old bicyclist Jeffrey D. King on Wednesday as he pedaled around the gates, which were down, in an attempt to beat the oncoming train. Last week, as the new Brightline train was offering preview runs before its debut, it struck and killed a 32-year-old woman who was crossing the tracks. Witnesses told police she tried to make it across after the guard rails were down. The currently runs between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach but will expand to Miami and Orlando. A woman was struck in July in Boca Raton in an apparent suicide, and another woman was hit in Deerfield Beach.
Apple announced in a statement on Wednesday that it plans to accelerate U.S. investment and create thousands of new jobs. For years Apple Inc. has been criticized for outsourcing manufacturing to China. Apple says it plans to bring back billions of dollars it has kept in tax havens overseas, and that it will pay a one-time tax of $38 billion on its overseas cash holdings. NPR's Laura Sydell told Kelly McEvers, host of All Things Considered, that Apple has kept some $250 billion outside the U.S.

Lawmakers grilled executives Facebook, Google's YouTube and Twitter on Wednesday about what the companies are doing to prevent terrorists from using their platforms to spread propaganda and recruit new followers. The Senate's commerce, science and transportation committee hearing comes amid growing government scrutiny over misuse of social media platforms and questions about what the companies are doing to prevent it. And it comes after November's exhaustive congressional hearings on what the companies knew — and did — about Russia's efforts to meddle with the 2016 U.S. elections using their platforms. Lawmakers acknowledged that the companies, especially Google and Facebook, have come a long way when it comes to weeding out extremist material. But they s...
