MK Yuli Edelstein responds to plan by Joint Arab List to boycott speech by Vice President Pence in Knesset this week. Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to all Knesset members Monday urging them to attend the Knesset plenum during the speech by US Vice President Mike Pence this Thursday amid threats by the Joint Arab List that they will boycott the speech. In his letter, Edelstein noted that this is an important event held at the request of the Vice President, whose purpose is to express the warm relations between Israel and the United States. "The presence of all Knesset members in this meeting is of the utmost importance," he stressed. "Those who are absent from it will harm the image of the Knesset, express contempt for the vital interests of the State of Israel...
Screening devices that detect suicide vests like the one that exploded in a New York City subway tunnel are being tested in a Los Angeles transit station, but U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday the Transportation Security Administration should speed up plans to deploy the technology nationally. Last Monday’s explosion in a crowded subway passageway near Times Square was the first attempted suicide bombing on American soil. At the time, counterterrorism experts said it is nearly impossible to screen for explosives on a subway system as large as New York’s. “The fact that we have this new, potentially life-saving technology at our fingertips — an ability to detect concealed explosives worn by cowards looking to do us harm — demands the federal governmen...

U.S. stocks opened sharply higher on Monday as investors eagerly awaited a vote on a bill that would cut corporate taxes. A slew of corporate deals also helped lift sentiment. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped about 200 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.6 percent, with financials and tech as the best-performing sectors. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.6 percent. The major averages hit intraday records at the open. "I think this is largely predicated on the belief that the tax plan is going to be passed tomorrow," said Robert Pavlik, chief investment strategist at SlateStone Wealth. "With the belief that corporate taxes will go down, ... investors think the market is not too expensive." Congress is expected to vote as early as Tuesday on a plan tha...

The family was asleep when the inferno erupted in a home on E. 14th St. near Ave S. around 2:30 a.m., according to FDNY officials. The 40-year-old woman died alongside her sons, ages 11 and 7, and a daughter, 3, according to cops. The father and surviving children — one of whom jumped from a window — escaped. Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, shlita, tells family to recite Psalms, learn Torah, instead of visiting grave on Hanukkah, as is the custom. Ponevezh Yeshiva dean Rabbi Gershon Edelstein advised the family of Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, zatzal, not to visit his grave at the end of the seven-day mourning period, but to say Psalms and learn Mishnah in his merit instead. Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman, 104, passed away Tuesday morning. The reason for Rabbi Edelstein's instructions is the celebration of the new Jewish month, as well as of the Hanukkah holiday, which ends on Wednesday, December 20. On Sunday, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin sent a letter of condolence to the Shteinman family, heaping warm praise on the recently deceased rabbi. "Besides for his impressive and humb...
The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, says the city is helping to provide extra security following a threat on the life of U.S. Sen. Cory Booker. Democratic Mayor Ras Baraka said Newark police were notified by U.S. Capitol police about the threat against the former mayor and his family. Members of the police division’s executive protection unit have been assigned to provide security at the Democratic senator’s home in Newark. Baraka said city police are working with Capitol police to ensure that the senator “is able to carry out his duties.” He said the security detail will have no impact on police services. No information was provided about the nature of the reported threat.
North Dakota law enforcement purchased more than $600,000 worth of body armor, tactical equipment and crowd control devices during the height of protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline, state invoices show. The purchases, tallied by The Associated Press from invoices obtained through a public records request, included pepper spray, flash-bang and smoke grenades, riot helmets, gas masks, night-vision goggles, more than 2,000 rounds of non-lethal ammunition and more. The equipment ultimately made up a small share of the $35 million in policing costs associated with the pipeline, and state officials defend the purchases as reasonable for a protest that attracted thousands of “water protectors” to southern North Dakota who skirmished — sometimes violently &mda...

The Department of Justice says Chicago’s U.S. attorney’s office is getting additional staff prosecutors so it can do more to reduce violent crime. Attorney General Jeff Sessions says a total of 40 new prosecutors will be distributed among 27 locations. Most will receive just one, including the southern district of Indiana and the western district of Michigan. A Friday Justice Department statement says the Chicago-based northern district of Illinois will get three, as will a district of Maryland. Chicago’s U.S. attorney’s office has more than 150 prosecutors. It has said for years that staff numbers were down, hampering its ability to open more gang and guns cases. President Donald Trump has criticized Chicago for high rates of gun violence. City officials ...
Once again, the Israel Air Force targeted terrorist objectives in northern Gaza, including a training base, in retaliation for the firing of two rockets into southern Israel on Sunday evening. A rocket landed near a home in the Western Negev. Fortunately, the home was empty at the time of the attack. The building sustained light damage. A few hours later, close to 3:00am, sirens wailed in the Ashkelon Coast Council. The IDF Spokesman reported the rocket fell short of its intended target, exploding in Gaza. The rocket fire from Gaza has resumed on an almost daily basis and for residents of Gaza border communities, they must once again remain within 15 seconds of a safe room. Leaders of many border communities are calling on the government and IDF to not wait for the situation to...
According to recent claims by the office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian leadership will not meet with any U.S. officials regarding the peace process at any point in the future. The claims were made in response to the recent recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by US President Donald Trump. In a special interview conducted by the Times of Israel, Abbas told reporters that the Palestinian leadership canceled meetings with top peace envoy Jason Greenblatt, President Trump’s Senior Adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner. “No one from the American administration will be met to discuss peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis because the [PA] president was very clear on that,” said Majdi al-Khalidi at the Organiz...
resident Donald Trump on Sunday sought to douse speculation that he may fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller amid an intensifying campaign by Trump allies to attack the wide-ranging Russia investigation as improper and politically motivated. Returning to the White House from Camp David, Trump was asked Sunday whether he intended to fire Mueller. "No, I'm not," he told journalists, insisting that there was "no collusion whatsoever" between his campaign and Russia. The president's comments came a day after a lawyer representing Trump's transition team accused Mueller of wrongfully obtaining thousands of emails sent and received by Trump officials before the start of his administration — a legal and public relations maneuver seen as possibly laying the groundwork ...
The heads of the local councils in southern Israel on Sunday evening urged the Israeli government to take action following yet another rocket attack from Gaza on the region. Two rockets had been fired from Gaza into Israeli territory. One of them hit a town near the Gaza border in the western Negev. The rocket reportedly exploded next to a home in the community, but caused no injuries. The building was lightly damaged, an IDF spokesperson said. The head of the Sdot Negev Regional Council, Tamir Idan, urged the government to respond to the rocket fire from Gaza. "We expect and demand that the security forces respond with force and make it clear to the terrorists that the State of Israel is determined not to allow continued firing. We are not prepared for the state of emergency ...
