A federal investigation will look into possible civil rights violations by police in the St. Louis area in the two months since protests broke out after a white former police officer was acquitted in the shooting death of a black suspect. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the investigation in a statement Monday. The FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office in St. Louis also will help with the investigation. Protest leaders, Democratic U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay and others called for a federal investigation. More than 300 people have been arrested at protests since Sept. 15, when a judge ruled that Jason Stockley was not guilty of first-degree murder in the 2011 death of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith. Several of those arrested have alleged heavy-handed arrests and even taunting b...

The ads leap out from the pages of almost any gun magazine: Soldiers wearing greasepaint and camouflage wield military-style rifles depicted as essential to the American way of life. A promotional spot by the Mossberg brand boasts of weapons “engineered to the specs of freedom and independence.” The ad campaigns by major gun makers did not pause after mass shootings at a Las Vegas country music concert and a Texas church, and the slick messages are big drivers of sales ahead of Black Friday, by far the heaviest shopping day each year for firearms. But the marketing tactics for the semi-automatic weapons known as AR rifles are under new scrutiny following the recent attacks. Gun-control activists say the ads risk inspiring the next shooter, while gun-rights advocates ins...

Last week on Monday a newly-wed couple tied the knot in Bnei Brak, bringing another happy family into the larger family of Bnei Yisroel. Except, it was discovered on Friday night during their Sheva Brachos that there seemed to be a problem with one of the rings. After Sheva Brachos concluded on Friday night, the bride told her sister that the ring which she was wearing was not the one which was originally ordered by the couple and that there was some sort of issue with the order. The story hit the couple and their families very hard. They inquired with rabbinical authorities with regards to how to proceed. Was this a case of a mistaken marriage since the bride did not intend to wed over this specific ring? An additional problem came from the side of the Chosson. Since he did not in...
Special counsel Robert Mueller says a lawyer for one of Donald Trump’s former campaign aides may have a conflict of interest. Mueller is investigating possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. In court papers Monday, he said Walter Mack, the attorney for Rick Gates, may have a conflict. Consumers are getting the word that taxpayer-subsidized health plans are widely available for next year for no monthly premium or little cost, and marketing companies say they’re starting to see an impact on sign-ups. “Free Obamacare Coverage in 2018,” says an online pitch from insurance broker eHealth, showing a young woman with a big smile. “See if you qualify.” HealthSherpa, a private website that focuses on signing people up for Affordable Care Act coverage, said nearly 1 in 5 of its customers thus far will be paying no monthly premium. New York -- Ikea relaunched a recall of 29 million chests and dressers Tuesday after the death of an eighth child. CEO Lars Petersson said Ikea wants to increase awareness of the recall campaign for several types of chest and dressers that can easily tip over if not properly anchored to a wall. The death of a California toddler, who was found trapped underneath an Ikea Malm dresser in May, has raised questions about whether Ikea has effectively spread the word about the recall, which was first announced in June 2016. The Swedish retailer and the federal safety regulators are asking customers to take immediate action to secure the dressers, or to return them. Petersson said Ikea has had an "extensive communication" campaign through social media, its website and television and print ads. ...

The economic growth would provide $169 billion in additional tax revenue for the federal government over the next decade, according to the analysis. The entire tax package is expected to add $1.4 trillion to the deficit over the same period of time. The White House and congressional Republicans, who have criticized the Tax Policy Center&rsq...
