DETROIT — An auto safety group is asking the government for a recall of Chrysler Pacifica minivans over complaints that the engines can stall without warning. The Center for Auto Safety petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Monday, asking for an investigation and a recall of 150,000 minivans from the 2017 model year. The group says over 50 people have complained to the government about stalling and Fiat Chrysler hasn’t been able to fix the problem. Some have complained that the vans have stalled several times. Fiat Chrysler says it takes customer concerns seriously and doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries due to the issue. The company says it’s monitoring data and will respond if it shows a safety defect. The petition, filed on behalf ...
Baltimore County police have identified the Parkville woman they say fabricated the report of an attempted carjacking and armed robbery at Towson Town Center. Pamela Davis, 46, of the unit block of Ashlar Hill Court in Parkville was charged in a summons with two counts of false statement to an officer. A trial is set for Jan. 16 at district court in Towson, according to online court records. Police say the woman's story shifted over time, and that surveillance footage countered her claim any incident ever took place. County police called in resources including air support and K9 units in pursuit of the two suspects they now say were never there.
Baltimore police Commissioner Kevin Davis said an autopsy performed Sunday on the body of Detective Sean Suiter caused investigators to "think about this murder in a different way" and discover "significant" new evidence. While Davis was tight-lipped about what the autopsy revealed and new evidence was found, the discovery did lead police to continue to hold the compact crime scene where the shooting took place for at least the next day, Davis said. However, investigators did release the surrounding area. Preempting questions about the decision to hold the area as a crime scene for so long, Davis said he would rather endure criticism from the ACLU than from Suiter's grieving widow. "I would love to respond to a crime scene with our crime scene investigators and press start on a sto...

FIRST TRIP TO AMERICA Rav Aharon came to the United States in 1935 to raise funds for the Yeshiva. He arrived on September 10th, 1935 having left Europe from Cherbourg, France aboard the Majestic. He stayed by his friend, Rabbi Kudensky of 6 Rutger Street in Manhattan. Rabbi Kudensky owned a Seforim store and was active in Agudas haRabbonim. He remained for eleven months because the financial situation was so bleak. A reception was held in Manhattan in his honor which included the names of some of New York’s most prominent Rabbis. Recognition was given to Rav Aharon as one of the leading Rabbis of the generation. Rav Aharon, however, was not particularly enamored by prominent pulpit Rabbis, and did not develop extensive contacts with them, even later in life. Even though he was ...
Authorities were scouring West Texas on Monday for those behind an apparent attack that killed one U.S. border agent and injured another. U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement Sunday that was thin on details about what happened, saying the two agents “were responding to activity” while on patrol near Interstate 10 in the area of Van Horn, which is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the border with Mexico and about 110 miles (175 kilometers) southeast of El Paso. CBP spokesman Douglas Mosier said 36-year-old agent Rogelio Martinez and his partner were transported to a hospital, where Martinez died. Martinez’s partner, whose name hasn’t been released, is in serious condition. Elected officials referred to it as an attack, with Gov. Greg Abbot...

Mumbai - India has cancelled a massive multi-million dollar missile deal with Israel, the Indian press reported on Monday, in what would be a major blow to flourishing Israeli-Indian ties. According to the report, a 2014 decision by New Delhi to purchase Rafael Advanced Defense System’s Spike anti-tank guided missile, had been overturned. Instead, the Indian Express reported, the Indian government has asked the country’s Defense Research and Development Organization to develop its own anti-tank missile. India had decided to purchase the Spike missile in 2014, selecting Israel’s government-owned Rafael defense contractor over a rival US offer of Javelin missiles that Washington had lobbied hard to win. According to reports at the time,...read more at JPost
The White House says it’s willing to strike a health-care provision from Senate legislation to cut taxes and overhaul the tax code if the provision becomes an impediment to passing one of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priorities. The provision would repeal a requirement that everyone in the U.S. have health insurance or pay a fine, but has emerged as a major sticking point for Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, whose vote the White House needs. Collins said Sunday that the issue should be dealt with separately. Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said the White House is open to scrapping the provision, which would repeal a key component of the Affordable Care Act health law enacted by President Barack Obama. Trump had pressed for the provision ...
Washington may not have seen the last of “The Mooch.” Anthony Scaramucci, the short-lived White House communications chief who was forced out after just 11 days on the job, said in an interview on Monday that he remains in close touch with the White House. He told The Associated Press that although he has not spoken to Donald Trump in over a month, he talks to members of the president’s inner circle “regularly” and sees himself working with Trump again in the future. “I have very good relationships there still, and you have to remember we were a team for 18 months, and so we all had different roles. And so I’m still playing my role frankly. I’m an advocate for the president, media surrogate when I need to be,” Scaramucci said. ...

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday, Rosh Chodesh Kislev, stated he was “saddened” after hearing President Reuven Rivlin rejected a request for a pardon for former IDF soldier Elor Azariya. After reaching his decision not to pardon Azariya, the President’s Residence issued the following statement to Azariya: “The President has given his opinion regarding the offenses committed by you and their circumstances, the content of your written application, and all the material and opinions brought before him, and has decided to reject the application. “From examining the material before him, the President learned that in passing sentence, the military court took into account the circumstances raised by you – which appear in part in th...

Iran on Monday rejected a harsh statement by Arab League foreign ministers condemning the Islamic Republic and its proxy Hezbollah, saying the tirade was “full of lies” and the product of Saudi “pressure and propaganda.” State media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as calling on Saudi Arabia to stop its “barbaric attacks” on Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been at war with Tehran-backed rebels since March 2015. He also called on Saudi Arabia to drop its boycott of the Gulf Arab nation of Qatar, which has warm ties with Iran. Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Cairo on Sunday lashed out at Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, accusing them of destabilizing the region and vowing to take the matter to the U.N....
Today, the second of Kislev marks the 55th Yahrtzeit of Rav Aharon Kotler, zt”l. Every so often, individuals emerge in Jewish history who, by dint of their personality and intellect, change the very topography of Jewish life. One such person was Rav Aharon Kotler, zt’l, the founder of Beth Medrash Gavoha in Lakewood, New Jersey. His twenty years in this country profoundyly changed the face of Torah Jewry. Interestingly enough, although the name of Rav Aharon Kotler is well known in Torah circles, very little biographical information of his earlier life in Europe is available. This is especially true for the English-reading public. In honor of the 55th yahrzeit of Rav Kotler, the Five Towns Jewish Times is presenting much new material in this mini-biography in a three-pa...
We should've listened to our parents when they told us to "eat your vegetables." Only 1 in 10 Americans are eating the recommended daily amount of fruits and veggies, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Federal guidelines recommend eating 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit and 2 to 3 cups of vegetables each day. Two years ago, only 9% of Americans ate enough veggies, while only 12% ate the required amount of fruit. Seung Hee Lee Kwan, Ph.D., the lead author of the study released Thursday, warns the lack of fruits and vegetables in Americans' diets raises the risks for chronic diseases including diabetes and heart disease. "We’re missing out on the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that fruits and vegetables provide," he said in a st...
President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. "Today the United States is designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. Should have happened a long time ago. Should have happened years ago," Trump said during a public meeting with his Cabinet. The President said the designation will impose "further sanctions and penalties" on North Korea in support of his administration's "maximum pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime." "The North Korean regime must be lawful and end its unlawful nuclear ballistic missile development and cease all support for international terrorism, which it is not doing," Trump added. The country had been removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in 2008, but the Trum...
