A couple of months before Auschwitz was liberated in January 1945, a Jewish prisoner secretly wrote a letter outlining the horrors he had witnessed there. He placed it in a thermos, the thermos in a leather pouch, and he buried it. Now, for the first time, Marcel Nadjari’s words have been published in full. Historian Pavel Polian told Deutsche Welle the letter is one of nine buried documents found at the concentration camp. He described them as “the most central documents of the Holocaust.” The documents were written by Nadjari and four fellow members of the “Sonderkommando” unit, which was tasked with moving bodies from the gas chamber to the crematorium. Nadjari’s letter, found in 1980, was written in his native Greek and is mostly illegible....
The FBI is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for arson and graffiti at a North Carolina Republican Party office last year. At the time, authorities said the Orange County GOP office was set on fire with a flammable device. Someone also spray-painted an anti-Republican slogan on the building which referred to “Nazi Republicans.” No one was inside the building at the time of the fire on Oct. 16, 2016. A news release from the FBI said a $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to solving the crime. Investigators are also seeking information to determine whether there’s a connection between the Hillsborough incident and vandalism that occurred in Carrboro in September 2015 which officials say targeted an ou...
Facebook’s effort to limit the spread of fake news using outside fact-checkers appears to be having an effect — though that finding comes with a major caveat. Once a story receives a false rating from a fact-checker, Facebook says, subsequent “impressions” can fall off by 80 percent. Impressions count the number of times Facebook users see a particular post. But it routinely takes more than three days for a story to receive a false rating. And most impressions occur when the story first comes out, not three days later. That’s the case with both true news and fake news. The information was shared in an email from a Facebook manager sent to the company’s fact-checking partners, including The Associated Press. Facebook gave an AP reporter access to...
Turkey’s government says it will ask parliament to extend for a fifth time the state of emergency that was declared following last year’s failed military coup. Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said Monday the state of emergency would be prolonged by a further three months to allow a “more effective” fight against the coup-plotters and what he called terrorist groups. Turkey launched a massive crackdown after the coup, arresting some 50,000 people and dismissing more than 110,000 from government jobs. Critics say the government has used its emergency powers to go after all opponents, including politicians, journalists and activists. The state of emergency was due to expire on Oct. 19. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said it would be regularly extended ...
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley says that President Donald Trump is strengthening his ability to resolve the North Korea nuclear crisis by threatening to abandon the nuclear deal with Iran. Haley is defending Trump’s decision not to certify Iran’s compliance with the deal. Trump’s critics argue he’s undermining U.S. credibility and options for diplomacy because North Korea will determine the U.S. doesn’t honor its commitments. But Haley says that argument is “just wrong.” She says it’s the opposite. Haley says failing to fix the 2015 deal with Iran would send the message that the United States “can be bought by a bad deal” that doesn’t actually eliminate the nuclear threat. Haley is speaking to an ...

Pakistani intelligence officials say suspected U.S. missiles have struck a home in the Kurram tribal region, killing 20 terrorists. Two intelligence officials said missiles fired from a suspected US drone hit a compound in the Mukbal area near the Afghan border Monday evening. They added that it was being used by militants from Haqqani network and that one of their top commanders, Sangeen Wali, was killed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media. The strike comes a day after roadside bombs killed four security troops engaged in a search operation for militants in Kurram. Pakistan considers the drone strike a violation of its sovereignty, while the U.S. accuses Pakistan of providing safe havens for militants, which Pakistan denies.
Security researchers have discovered a Wi-Fi network vulnerability that could allow attackers to steal sensitive information or spread malicious software while someone is logged into a computer or mobile device. A report published Monday said the breach could only happen if an attacker is within range of the potential victim, but the weakness could affect anyone using a Wi-Fi network, whether at home, the office or at a public coffee shop. The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry group, says there’s no evidence that the vulnerability discovered by researcher Mathy Vanhoef has been exploited maliciously. It affects WPA2, a protocol used to secure Wi-Fi networks. The group says the problem can be resolved through straightforward software updates. Major platform providers have already s...
President Donald Trump said Monday that he believes Cuba is responsible for unexplained, invisible attacks in Cuba that have harmed American government workers. Though Trump’s comments appeared to be a new allegation, it wasn’t clear whether he meant Cuba was behind the attacks or merely shared the onus because it failed to keep Americans safe on its soil. The United States has avoided casting blame on Cuban President Raul Castro’s government for the attacks that began last year and have eluded an FBI investigation. “I do believe Cuba’s responsible. I do believe that,” Trump said in a Rose Garden news conference. “And it’s a very unusual attack, as you know. But I do believe Cuba is responsible.” The president did not elaborate...

The Supreme Court is taking up an appeal by 11 states that argue American Express violated antitrust laws by barring merchants from asking customers to use other credit cards that charge lower fees. The justices said Monday they would review a ruling by the federal appeals court in New York that sided with American Express. The case stems from a lawsuit filed by states and the Obama administration in 2010 against American Express, Mastercard and Visa. The lawsuit said that letting merchants steer customers to cards with lower fees for merchants or to other preferred cards would benefit consumers and increase incentives for networks to reduce card fees. Visa and MasterCard entered into consent judgments in 2011 and stopped their anti-steering rules for merchants while American Expr...
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson insisted that persistent tensions with President Donald Trump were not hindering his mission as the nation’s top diplomat, all while ducking, dancing and sidestepping the question of whether he truly called the president a “moron.” Tillerson on Sunday dismissed the brouhaha as the “petty stuff” of Washington. Asked about a leading GOP senator’s comment — “You cannot publicly castrate your own secretary of state” — Tillerson would have none of it. “I checked. I’m fully intact,” he quipped. Again and again, Tillerson declined in a news show interview to attest to the accuracy of the report about his use of the word “moron” to describe the commander in chief. Ti...
The Supreme Court is leaving in place a decision that the alleged mastermind of the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 U.S. sailors should face a trial by a military commission. The court on Monday declined to take up the case of Saudi national Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri. Al-Nashiri had sought to challenge the authority of a military commission in Guantanamo Bay hearing his case. But an appeals court ruled last year that al-Nashiri’s challenge would have to wait until after his trial. Al-Nashiri argued that military commissions only have authority over offenses that take place during an armed conflict. He said the U.S. was not officially at war with al-Qaida at the time of the attack. Al-Nashiri’s trial date is not yet scheduled.
Three of the Senate’s red-state Democrats are heading to the home of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Monday night as part of the administration’s efforts to reach out to moderate lawmakers. Democratic aides say Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Claire McCaskill of Missouri are dining at the power couple’s home in Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood. President Donald Trump’s daughter and her husband are senior White House advisers. Republican Sens. Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and Pat Toomey, are also expected to attend. The get-together comes as the administration gears up for an effort to overhaul the tax code. The three declined to sign an August letter by the rest of the Senate’s Democrats that laid out conditions ...
US President Donald Trump said Monday that the “total termination” of the Iran nuclear deal remains possible, after refusing to recertify the 2015 accord and leaving its fate to Congress. Speaking to reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting, he said: “I feel strongly about what I did. I’m tired of being taken advantage of. “It might be total termination, that’s a real possibility, some would say that’s a greater possibility.” His comments came as the EU announced it was sending its chief diplomat to Washington next month to fight to save an accord that saw Tehran dramatically scale back its nuclear ambitions in return for an end to punishing sanctions. Trump alarmed allies across the Atlantic with his speech on Friday in which he stoppe...
President Donald Trump’s chief economist says the administration’s plan to cut corporate tax rates will cause average household incomes to jump $4,000 a year — a stunning 5 percent increase that could be met with skepticism among tax experts and Democratic lawmakers. The analysis by Kevin Hassett, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, says the estimated income growth is “conservative” and based on academic studies. The analysis argues that a large amount of the savings from trimming the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 35 percent would flow to workers, rather than investors. Separate studies, including a 2012 Treasury Department analysis, suggest the clear majority of any savings would go to investors and would be unlikely to p...
An unmanned Russian cargo ship has docked successfully at the International Space Station, delivering supplies to its six-member crew. The Progress MS-07 ship, carrying 2.5 metric tons (2.75 tons) of water, food and scientific equipment, moored at the space outpost in automatic mode Monday two days after its launch from the Russian-leased Baikonur launch complex in Kazakhstan. Saturday’s launch came after a two-day postponement and docking plan change. Initially, the Progress cargo ship was to test a new regime for docking with the space station less than four hours after launch. But the Thursday launch was aborted after an unspecified glitch and space officials used the regular two-day regime.
