Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron showered high praise on President Trump’s “capacity to listen” after meeting the U.S. president at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy, The Associated Press reported Saturday. Macron, who was elected earlier this month, spoke fondly of his discussions with Trump, recalling that the two men were able to communicate respectfully and productively. “I saw a leader with strong opinions on a number of subjects, which I share in part – the fight against terrorism, the willingness to keep our place in the family of nations – and with whom I have disagreements that we spoke about very calmly. I saw someone who listens and who is willing to work,” he said. Read more at The Hill.

So how should we celebrate a Bas Mitzvah? The stores on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst and Lawrence may really like this one. But read on. The Gemara (Niddah 45b) tells us that a girl becomes an adult at the age of 12. This tradition was handed down to us by Moshe from Har Sinai as were all the other figures, weights, and amounts. A girl enters into adulthood a full year earlier than does a boy. The reason for this, as explained by the Gemara, is that Hashem placed more wisdom and understanding into women than into men. Rav Shlomo Volbe zt”l takes this a step further. When Dovid HaMlech ordained that people should recite 100 blessings a day, he did so because he detected a lacunae in Klal Yisroel’s fear of heaven. To increase that spirituality, Dovid HaMelech ordained that we ...

Joel praised Dermer’s vigorous defense of Israel as he conferred the honorary degree upon him. “Your tenure as ambassador has taken its character from everything that came before it in your life. You are unapologetic in your defense of Israel’s right to exist as a nation and a people and mince no word...
Prior to Shavuos in previous years, I published articles on the topics of producing and eating dairy bread, how to make kosher cheese, whether Shavuos is preceded by Parshas Bamidbar or Parshas Naso, and about the laws of making pareve foods. All of these articles can be accessed on RabbiKaganoff.com This year, I decided to distribute an article by my close friend, Rabbi Avraham Rosenthal, on the Ashkenazic custom of reciting Akdamus on Shavuos. A common minhag among Ashkenazim is to read the beautiful poem of Akdamus at the beginning of the kerias haTorah on Shavuos morning. This article provides some basic historical and halachic background to this magnificent work. The Author The name of the person who composed Akdamus can be found as an acronymic in the lines of the poem. The firs...
Los Angeles, California – Persian Jewish refugees began streaming into the United States 40 years ago. Although Persian Jews had historically been very traditional religiously, some observers predicted that within a generation, these immigrants would assimilate almost completely into the broader American culture. Instead, the Persian Jewish community has grown in vibrancy and religious commitment. In the greater Los Angeles area, there are now more than 25 Persian shuls -- all Orthodox. In recognition of the community’s successes and challenges, the Persian Rabbinical Council (PRC) based in California is hosting a conference of Persian Rabbis and educators from across the country, including greater New York, Atlanta, Baltimore and Dallas. The Persian American Rabbinical Conf...
When EgyptAir Flight 804 from Paris to Cairo crashed mysteriously into the Mediterranean a year ago, killing 66 people, Donald Trump quickly called it a terrorist act. But according to a report in Friday’s daily newspaper Le Parisien, French investigators are now focusing on the possibility the copilot’s Apple iPhone 6S or his iPad Mini 4 may have been plugged into an unsuitable outlet in the cockpit and burned or blew up, setting off the chain of events leading to the crash. Fifteen French citizens were killed, but French investigators have had to work around the reluctance of the Egyptian government to cooperate. Security records showed the flight crew had the Apple devices in their bags when they were scanned at Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport, and ...
Washington - Zbigniew Brzezinski, who helped topple economic barriers between the Soviet Union, China and the West as President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser, died Friday. He was 89. His death was announced on social media Friday night by his daughter, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. She called him “the most inspiring, loving and devoted father any girl could ever have.” In a statement, Carter called Brzezinski “a superb public servant” as well as “brilliant, dedicated and loyal.” Earnest and ambitious, Brzezinski helped Carter bridge wide gaps between the rigid Egyptian and Israeli leaders, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, leading to the Camp David accords in September 1978. Three months later, U.S.-China relations were normalized, a top ...

The Islamic State group on Saturday claimed responsibility for the attack on a bus carrying Christians on their way to a remote desert monastery south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, which killed 29. Egypt responded to Friday’s attack by launching a series of airstrikes that targeted what it said were militant bases in eastern Libya in which the assailants were trained. On Saturday, the military said on its official Facebook page that the airstrikes were continuing “day and night” and that they have “completely” destroyed their targets. It gave no details. “What you’ve seen today will not go unpunished. An extremely painful strike has been dealt to the bases. Egypt will never hesitate to strike terror bases anywhere,” President Abdel-Fattah...
Israel Prison Services (IPS) on Saturday morning announced that the terrorist prisoners' hunger strike ended after negotiations with the strike's leaders. According to IPS, Israel reached an agreement with the Red Cross and the Palestinian Authority, allowing the PA to fund a second monthly visit so families can see their terrorist relatives more often. According to the prisoners, the negotiations were held in the Ashkelon prison, and the agreement satisfies all of the prisoners' demands. Security sources said the hunger strikers were not promised anything included in arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti's document, which included more TV channels, a free academic degree, and longer visiting hours. During the 40-day period , 1,578 imprisoned terrorists, most of them...
British police on Saturday released surveillance-camera images of the Manchester concert bomber on the night of the attack as they appealed for more information about his final days. Authorities said they had made major progress in unravelling the plot behind the concert bombing but acknowledged there were still gaps in their knowledge. Britain reduced its terrorism threat level a notch Saturday, from “critical” to “severe,” yet security remained high as jittery residents tried to enjoy a long holiday weekend. Armed police officers and soldiers were deployed at soccer matches, concerts and other big events. Abedi, a 22-year-old Briton of Libyan descent, died in Monday’s explosion, which killed 22 others and wounded nearly 120 as crowds were leaving an Arian...
Baltimore enacted a city-wide curfew on Friday. The curfew, which ends in August, prohibits children 14 years old or younger from staying out past 9 p.m. The time for the 14 to 16 age group is 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. City police commissioner Kevin Davis told the Jimmy Mathis Show on Saturday morning that the objective is to keep kids off the streets and reconnect them with responsible parents and guardians. But Davis also mentioned violence being a factor in the decision. "Our homicide victims average 13 arrests a piece in their lifetime and half of our homicide victims have been arrested at one point or another for illegally carrying a gun," he said. "We have to continue to focus on the people who we know are most likely to re-offend with a gun and hurt other people." Davi...
President Donald Trump is actively discussing major changes in the White House, including having lawyers vet his tweets and shaking up his top staff, as he grapples with the fallout from probes into his campaign’s dealings with Russia, according to several senior administration officials and outside advisers. Other revisions on the table include adding a roster of outside lawyers to help deal with the legal ramifications of the Russia investigation, officials and allies said. “Everything is in play,” one Trump adviser said. Meetings devoted to White House operations are scheduled for next week, after the president returns from his overseas trip, officials said. The anticipated moves are the latest sign of how the probe into Russia’s interference in last year&rsquo...
President Donald Trump declared his first foreign trip a “home run” and said he’d rallied the world’s governments to stand strong against terrorism, despite a series of stark differences that emerged between the U.S. and its allies. “I am now more hopeful than ever that nations of many faiths and from many religions and from many regions all over can join together in a common cause,” Trump said as he stopped at a U.S. military base in Sicily on his way back to the U.S. Citing the bombing attack this week in Manchester, Trump said it shows the need for the world to join forces and “absolutely and totally defeat” terrorism. Trump ended his nine-day overseas trip, which stretched from the Middle East to the Group of Seven meeting in Taormina,...
Both political parties are finding cause for optimism in a House race in Montana won by a Republican who faced last-minute assault charges. Looking ahead to next year’s midterm elections, Democratic strategists said Friday that forcing Republicans to spend millions for a narrow win in a conservative state amounted to a victory itself. The final unofficial tally in Thursday’s election showed wealthy Republican businessman Greg Gianforte with 50.2 percent of the vote, compared to Democratic musician Rob Quist with 44.1 percent. Republicans say they employed a successful strategy in defining the Democratic candidate early and following through until Election Day. They argued that gives them renewed cause for optimism approaching two other special elections next month in Georgi...
British police investigating the Manchester Arena bombing made a new arrest Friday while continuing to search addresses associated with the attacker who killed 22 people. Seven other men are in custody in connection with Monday’s blast, all are being held on suspicion of offenses violating the Terrorism Act. Their ages ranged from 18 to 38. A 16-year-old boy and a 34-year-old woman who had been arrested were released without charge, police said. Authorities are chasing possible links between the bomber, Salman Abedi, and militants in Manchester, elsewhere in Europe, and in North Africa and the Middle East. Britain’s security level has been upgraded to “critical” meaning officials believe another attack may be imminent. Abedi, a college dropout who had grown up i...

President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner talked with the Russian ambassador in December about establishing a back channel for communications, ABC News has learned from two sources. The sources stress that the talk between Kushner and the Russian envoy about communications was focused on the U.S. response to the crisis in Syria and other policy-related matters. The meeting, as ABC News has reported previously, took place at Trump Tower in New York and was also attended by Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who later became President Trump's short-lived national security adviser. The Washington Post was the first to report that Kushner wanted to set up a secret back channel to communicate with Russian officials during the transition period between the election and Trum...
