The “America First” president who vowed to extricate America from onerous overseas commitments appears to be warming up to the view that when it comes to global agreements, a deal’s a deal. From NAFTA to the Iran nuclear agreement to the Paris climate accord, President Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric is colliding with the reality of governing. Despite repeated pledges to rip up, renegotiate or otherwise alter them, the U.S. has yet to withdraw from any of these economic, environmental or national security deals, as Trump’s past criticism turns to tacit embrace of several key elements of U.S. foreign policy. The administration says it is reviewing these accords and could still pull out of them. A day after certifying Iran’s compliance with the nuclear ...
Israeli court extends arrest of an Israeli-American teenager accused of making dozens of anti-Semitic bomb threats in the US and elsewhere. An Israeli court on Thursday extended the remand of an Israeli-American teenager accused of making dozens of anti-Semitic bomb threats in the United States and elsewhere, police said. Israel is to take delivery of three more F-35 stealth fighters from the United States on Sunday, adding to two which arrived in December, an army statement said. They are among 50 that Israel has agreed to buy from aerospace giant Lockheed Martin. US President Donald Trump has publicly upbraided Lockheed over "out of control" costs of the plane, the most expensive in history. The company has said it will bring down the price in the future. While other countries have ordered the planes, Israel -- which receives more than $3 billion a year in US defense aid -- says it will be the first outside the United States with an operational F-35 squadron. Israel is buying its first 33 F-35s at an average price of about $110 million (103.5 million euros) each. Israeli components will be integrate...

Study finds those who drink artificially-sweetened beverages such as Diet Coke or Pepsi Max are at three times the risk of suffering strokes compared to non-drinkers. Just one diet drink a day can triple the risk of a deadly stroke, a study suggests. The researchers also found links to dementia described as a “worrying association” by experts. But the findings were dismissed by some British authorities, while others have called for more investigation. The US study found those who drank a can of artificially-sweetened pop — such as Diet Coke or Pepsi Max — daily were at three times the risk of suffering the most common form of stroke compared to non-drinkers. They were also 2.9 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. But after ac...

Mastercard's latest credit card comes with a biometric zone that stores your fingerprints. Mastercard has rolled out a credit card that has an integrated fingerprint scanner, making it easier to authenticate purchases at retail stores. The card stores two fingerprints, and features an embedded sensor that lets you authorize payments instead of having to sign or use a PIN. To get started, you'll have to register your fingerprints at your bank, after which the information will be converted to a "encrypted digital template" that will be stored on the card. Mastercard's biometric cards are just as thin as existing credit cards, and will work with current chip-and-PIN readers. You'll be able to authenticate purchases by placing your finger on the integrated biome...
Head of the Tanzim faction of Fatah, Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for his heinous acts, is receiving international media notoriety after launching a prison hunger strike last week. An estimated 1,100 terrorists imprisoned in Israel of a total of about 6,000 are participating in the hunger strike. The following information, provided by the Israel Foreign Ministry, provides a bit of an insight as to who Barghouti is since some of the international media portray him more as a freedom fighter and not who he actually is. Marwan Barghouti, a convicted murderer and terrorist, was one of the leaders of the Second Intifada, the Palestinian terror campaign of suicide bombings and shooting attacks on Israeli citizens, between 2000-2005, and not just an i...

We live at a time when even the most “humble” amongst us seems to have a blog, or a Twitter account, or a website or, or, or… or some other way or means for amplifying his voice, perspectives, “teachings”, etc.  As you can imagine, if the humble is so quick to trumpet his gifts then the more prideful and powerful is certain to make sure we hew to his view of the world. We are a prideful creation.  Yet we know – from our teachings and our experience – that pride is a guaranteed prelude to a fall.  How then to step away from our pride?  The only way to become humble is to be honest about our experience, for experience is the only route we have to genuine humility. Life is never lived in the theoretical, sacred ideal we aspire t...

Survey finds Jewish and Arab citizens largely comfortable, but want to keep to their own communities. JTA - A majority of Jewish Israelis and Arab Israelis feel comfortable living in Israel as “who they are,” but do not think they should live together in the same neighborhoods, a new survey finds. The Jewish People Policy Institute, or JPPI, on Wednesday released its second annual Pluralism Index. The index, according to JPPI President Avinoam Bar-Yosef, “shows once again that the greatest success of the Jewish state is the integration of Diaspora Jews, from more than 90 different countries, in one thriving society. They wish to live together, form families together, and build a common future.” “The fact that many Arabs living in the Jewish state defin...

Second appeal by far-right politician against jail sentence for displaying tattoo of Nazi death camp rejected. A German court rejected the appeal of a far-right German politician against his sentence for displaying a tattoo of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Marcel Zech, a member of the extreme-right National Democratic Party, displayed the large tattoo on his back at a public swimming pool in November 2015. The tattoo included a phrase from the gate of the Buchenwald death camp, “Jedem das Seine” — “to each his own.” In December 2015, the district court in Oranienburg gave him a six-month suspended sentence, which he appealed. The appeals court rejected his appeal and in November 2016 ruled that the district court had been too lenient. It...

Leaflets distributed at campuses in Melbourne called the Holocaust 'the greatest swindle of all time' and the 'Holohoax.' Leaflets denying the Holocaust were distributed on two university campuses in Melbourne, Australia. The leaflets distributed in recent days began appearing at the same time of the opening in the city of the movie “Denial,” which portrays the court battle between Jewish historian Deborah Lipstadt and Holocaust-denier David Irving. The leaflets tell readers that that the “official version” of the Holocaust, which is also portrayed that way in Hollywood, is “demonstrably false.” The National Chairperson of The Australasian Union of Jewish Students Isabella Polger said: “These leaflets are the result of a...
Hundreds of Israelis gathered on a grassy hill overlooking parliament on Thursday to smoke marijuana in an act of communal defiance of current laws. Sitting in small groups on mats shaded by trees in the Rose Garden just across from the Knesset, participants lit up as the clock struck 4:20 pm for the local version of the traditional worldwide April 20 pro-marijuana events, known as "420" rallies. In the afternoon, revellers were mostly men in their early 20s but organizers expected thousands more people to join the event, set to continue till the early hours of Friday. Guitar music hung in the air with the smoke wafting skyward and the sound of conversation. Police did not intervene. To Itamar Yitzhakov, nearly 22 years old from Holon near Tel Aviv, the smoking event -- known locally ...
Baltimore, MD - Apr. 20, 2017 - In the 4th aliyah of Parshas Emor, Sefiras Haomer is discussed as the time period between the bringing of the barley offering on Pesach to the offering of the loaves of bread on Shavuos. This transition from the food of animals to the refined, processed food of a human teaches us about our work during this time period. We are involved in the upward process of refining ourselves as human beings, making sure that we express our G-dliness. We mourn the deaths of Rabi Akiva's students, who did not fully appreciate that a human can reach levels of G-dliness and bringing honor to Hashem, even when we are in golus conditions that are much less than honorable.
