For more than eight years, Barack Obama has sought to explain the African-American experience to the rest of the country. As he inaugurated the National Museum of African American History and Culture on today, the president suggested the new institution might give both sides of the current racial divide a chance to see each other in a way that still eludes us. “We’re not a burden on America, or a stain on America, or an object of pity, or charity for America. We’re America,” the president said. “It reaffirms that all of us are American, that African-American history is not somehow separate from our larger American story, it’s not the underside of the American story.” At a time when multiple fatal police shootings of African-Americans ha...
One of the world's largest package delivery companies is stepping up efforts to integrate drones into its system. UPS has partnered with robot-maker CyPhy Works to test the use of drones to make commercial deliveries to remote or difficult-to-access locations. The companies began testing the drones on Thursday, when they launched one from the seaside town of Marblehead. The drone flew on a programmed route for 3 miles over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver an inhaler at Children's Island. The successful landing was greeted by jubilant shouts from CyPhy Works and UPS employees on the island to witness the test. "I thought it was fantastic," said John Dodero, UPS vice president for industrial engineering. CyPhy Works founder Helen Greiner, who previously co-founded robot-make...
In a potential sign that Israel’s ties with the Sunni Arab axis in the Middle East are indeed getting stronger, the Kuwaiti United Nations delegation — for the first time in history – did not walk out of the hall on Thursday during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly on Thursday, the Hebrew news site nrg reported. Speaking with nrg, an Israeli diplomatic official said, “This was without a doubt a symbolic act that has not been seen before.” In his UN speech, Netanyahu said that in addition to Egypt and Jordan, which already have signed peace treaties with Israel, “many other states in the region recognize that Israel is not their enemy. They recognize that Israel is their ally. Our common enemies are ISIS a...

As expected, the NYTimes calls Clinton best candidate, capable of handling all challenges; says her mistakes are 'help desk' errors. On Saturday, the New York Times endorsed Hillary Clinton, claiming that she is more qualified than Donald Trump to handle the various challenges that the US currently faces. In the article, Clinton was described as "one of the most tenacious politicians of her generation," displaying an excellent command of diplomacy and policy, while enjoying a reputation for grit and bipartisan cooperation. According to the Times, "A lifetime’s commitment to solving problems in the real world qualifies Hillary Clinton for this job, and the country should put her to work." Hillary has served as Secretary of State, as well as New York senator. ...
Trump advisor negates claim that sovereignty in Judea and Samaria would ruin Israel's Jewish identity. David Friedman, Trump's top advisor, came out against claims that Jewish rule in Judea and Samaria would hurt the rest of Israel's Jews by diluting the Jewish character of the country. "Right now, 75% of the population within the Green Line is Jewish," Friedman said, in a video publicized by Channel 2. "There are 400,000 Jews in Judea and Samaria, as well as another 400,000 in eastern Jerusalem. And it's funny, but the Arab birthrate is declining." According to Friedman, there is a trend of Arabs leaving Judea and Samaria, with their names remaining on the property deeds. "So if you ask 10 different statisticians how many Arabs live in Judea and Samaria, no...
Washington (CNN) President Barack Obama vetoed a bill Friday that would allow family members of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia, pitting him against Congress and both presidential candidates on an emotionally charged matter. The White House claimed the legislation could expose US diplomats and servicemen to litigation in other countries. Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress say they'll override Obama's veto next week. Obama has now issued 12 vetoes. If successful, Congress' override would be the first of Obama's presidency. Support for the "Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act" ran high among lawmakers, who overwhelmingly passed the bill earlier this year after pressure from victims' groups. The bill would end foreign countries' ...
The international diplomatic "quartet" of Mideast peacemakers called once again on Friday for Israel and the Palestinians to take steps to resume stalled peace talks. At a meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, the top diplomats of the European Union, Russia, United Nations and United States urged the parties to create conditions for restarting "meaningful" negotiations toward a two-state solution. For the Israelis, this means a halt to settlement construction on territory claimed by the Palestinians. For the Palestinians, it means an end to incitement of violence. The diplomats were also joined by the foreign ministers of Egypt and France, whose countries have each proposed ideas to restart talks. The quartet said all participants had agreed on the importance of ...
BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) -- The first 911 call came in just before 7 p.m. on a busy Friday night at the Cascade Mall: A man with a rifle was shooting at people in the Macy's Department Store. By the time police arrived moments later, the carnage at the Macy's makeup counter was complete. Four people were dead and the shooter was gone, last seen walking toward Interstate 5. A fifth victim, a man, died in the early morning hours Saturday as police finished sweeping the 434,000-square-foot building. "There are people waking up this morning and their world has changed forever. The city of Burlington has probably changed forever, but I don't think our way life needs to change," Burlington Mayor Steve Sexton said Saturday at a news conference. "This was a sensel...

The Israeli official provided no further details on Sunday's meetings. He spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.
Explosion at a ground-floor shop in downtown Budapest injures two. The cause is not yet clear. Two people were injured on Saturday night in an explosion at a ground-floor shop in downtown Budapest, Hungary, The Associated Press reported. The two victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police and rescue personnel cordoned off the area near the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, according to AP. The blast did not set off any fires at the scene. No information was available about what caused the explosion, but local media cited by Russia Today reported that the explosion may have been triggered by a gas leak at the premises. While the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, those living close to its site have departed their apartments, local media outlet HVG r...
Video footage released Saturday shows Keith Lamont Scott taking four steps slowly backward with his arms at his sides when he is hit in a burst of four gunshots from police, then crumples to the pavement. From neither vantage point – a police dashboard camera and a body camera worn by one of the officers on the scene – can it be determined whether Scott is holding a gun. But police can be heard repeatedly shouting “Drop the gun!” at the 43-year-old Scott, who died from his wounds Tuesday as his wife stood nearby. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney released the videos Saturday after a tumultuous week of protests and two nights of street violence spurred by the shooting. In the dashboard video, a police SUV can be seen pulling into the parki...
After traffic was stopped in on Falls Road following a nearby bank robbery, an encounter with one vehicle led a police patrol sergeant to shoot and kill a suspect Friday afternoon. Both men were wanted in several bank robberies, including one that had just taken place. Police responded at 1:08 p.m. to the Wells Fargo Bank in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road. In short order, the sergeant shut down traffic at Falls and Old Court roads, what was thought to be a likely escape route. Early investigation, police say, has found officers were on foot on Old Court Road along the line of stopped traffic when a Ford Taurus traveling east pulled out of that line, crossed the center line and drove toward one officer. At about 1:20 p.m., as the vehicle was headef for the officer, he fir...
B'nei Yisrael are commanded (27:4) that after they cross the Yardein they are to set down the rocks on Har Eival, etc. In the gemara Sanhedrin 44a, R' Shaila teaches that Yehoshua did not act accordingly as the pasuk instructed to perform this ceremony immediately after crossing the Yardein but he travelled for 60 mil. Tosafos asks an obvious question. B'nei Yisrael were clearly commanded to follow these proceedings on Har Grizim and Har Eival. Is it Yehoshua's fault that these mountains were 60 mil from the Yardein? Tosafos puts together a rather creative answer. In the gemara (Sotah 33b) there is a dispute between R' Yehuda and R' Elazar. R' Yehuda holds that Har Grizim and Eival were far away from the Yardein while R' Elazar holds that they were ...
With Rosh Hashanah quickly approaching, only 11 days left, I would like to turn our attention from this week’s Parsha of Ki Savo and focus on this great holiday. On the surface, Rosh Hashanah which celebrates the creation of Adam and Eve, seems to have no direct relationship to the Jewish people any more than it relates to the rest of the world. It is the birthday of Man’s original ancestor. However, as we take a closer look we will discover that this is not the case. Join me in this exploration. If we were to find a small object which upon close inspection indicates much design and genius in its construction we would be correct to assume that its maker created it for a given purpose. There is nothing in our life experience that indicates more design and genius than this world...
Multiple sources close to Ted Cruz say the Texas senator is expected indicate his support for Donald Trump as soon as Friday. It is unclear whether Cruz will say only that he is voting for the Republican nominee, as other lawmakers have done, or offer a more full-throated endorsement, but the idea of throwing any support to Trump is controversial within Cruzworld. “If he announces he endorses, it destroys his political brand,” said someone who had worked for Cruz's campaign. Steve Deace, a prominent conservative Iowa radio host who was a major Cruz backer, also tweeted Friday that the senator would endorse Trump. A spokeswoman for Cruz did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Trump’s former primary foe has so far refused to back him, going so far a...
This week’s Torah portion talks about the mitzva to emulate Hashem, as the Torah says, “and you shall walk in His ways” (Devarim 28:9).One of the most fundamental ways we can emulate Hashem is by emulating Hashem’s kindness. The following true story is a dilemma that arose as a result of an act of kindness.   Aron was driving on Erev Shabbos, and saw his friend Meir walking back form the grocery store. Meir was holding four shopping bags and was walking in the hot summer weather. Aron slowed the car down and called out to Meir. “Meir, why should you walk in the heat? Can I please give you a ride”? Meir replied, “No thank you, it’s okay, I don’t mind the exercise”. Aron responded, “No Meir, I insist, why should you stra...
"The Rabbinical Council of America today takes a major step forward toward alleviating the suffering of those who cannot successfully end marriages due to the refusal of one of the parties to participate in effecting a Jewish divorce," said Rabbi Shalom Baum, president of the RCA. A resolution adopted by the RCA now requires "each of its members [to] utilize, in any wedding at which he is the officiant (mesader kiddushin), in addition to a ketubah, a rabbinically-sanctioned prenuptial agreement, where available, that aids in our community's efforts to ensure the timely and unconditional issuance of a get."  According to Jewish law, both the husband and the wife must participate willingly in the delivery and acceptance of a get, a Jewish divorce document,...
We regret to inform you of the tragic Petira of 11-year-old Dovi Sass Z”L, who was struck in the head by a baseball last week. As had reported, Dovi was playing baseball near his home in Edmonton, Canada, when the horrible tragedy occurred. Tens of thousands of people were Mispallel for his recovery, and people donated Tzedakah in the merit of his speedy recovery. A campaign was launched on The Chesed Fund to raise money for Hachnosas Kallah in his Zechus. Klal Yisroel in its incredible act of caring for another Jew in pain donated $65,000 in just FOUR days. More than 950 people – most of whom do not know this precious Neshama or his family – donated graciously in his merit. This money will surely be a Zechus for his Neshama, as he ascends to Shomayim. Unfort...
