After traffic was stopped in on Falls Road following a nearby bank robbery, an encounter with one vehicle led a police patrol sergeant to shoot and kill a suspect Friday afternoon. Both men were wanted in several bank robberies, including one that had just taken place. Police responded at 1:08 p.m. to the Wells Fargo Bank in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road. In short order, the sergeant shut down traffic at Falls and Old Court roads, what was thought to be a likely escape route. Early investigation, police say, has found officers were on foot on Old Court Road along the line of stopped traffic when a Ford Taurus traveling east pulled out of that line, crossed the center line and drove toward one officer. At about 1:20 p.m., as the vehicle was headef for the officer, he fir...
B'nei Yisrael are commanded (27:4) that after they cross the Yardein they are to set down the rocks on Har Eival, etc. In the gemara Sanhedrin 44a, R' Shaila teaches that Yehoshua did not act accordingly as the pasuk instructed to perform this ceremony immediately after crossing the Yardein but he travelled for 60 mil. Tosafos asks an obvious question. B'nei Yisrael were clearly commanded to follow these proceedings on Har Grizim and Har Eival. Is it Yehoshua's fault that these mountains were 60 mil from the Yardein? Tosafos puts together a rather creative answer. In the gemara (Sotah 33b) there is a dispute between R' Yehuda and R' Elazar. R' Yehuda holds that Har Grizim and Eival were far away from the Yardein while R' Elazar holds that they were ...
With Rosh Hashanah quickly approaching, only 11 days left, I would like to turn our attention from this week’s Parsha of Ki Savo and focus on this great holiday. On the surface, Rosh Hashanah which celebrates the creation of Adam and Eve, seems to have no direct relationship to the Jewish people any more than it relates to the rest of the world. It is the birthday of Man’s original ancestor. However, as we take a closer look we will discover that this is not the case. Join me in this exploration. If we were to find a small object which upon close inspection indicates much design and genius in its construction we would be correct to assume that its maker created it for a given purpose. There is nothing in our life experience that indicates more design and genius than this world...
Multiple sources close to Ted Cruz say the Texas senator is expected indicate his support for Donald Trump as soon as Friday. It is unclear whether Cruz will say only that he is voting for the Republican nominee, as other lawmakers have done, or offer a more full-throated endorsement, but the idea of throwing any support to Trump is controversial within Cruzworld. “If he announces he endorses, it destroys his political brand,” said someone who had worked for Cruz's campaign. Steve Deace, a prominent conservative Iowa radio host who was a major Cruz backer, also tweeted Friday that the senator would endorse Trump. A spokeswoman for Cruz did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Trump’s former primary foe has so far refused to back him, going so far a...
This week’s Torah portion talks about the mitzva to emulate Hashem, as the Torah says, “and you shall walk in His ways” (Devarim 28:9).One of the most fundamental ways we can emulate Hashem is by emulating Hashem’s kindness. The following true story is a dilemma that arose as a result of an act of kindness.   Aron was driving on Erev Shabbos, and saw his friend Meir walking back form the grocery store. Meir was holding four shopping bags and was walking in the hot summer weather. Aron slowed the car down and called out to Meir. “Meir, why should you walk in the heat? Can I please give you a ride”? Meir replied, “No thank you, it’s okay, I don’t mind the exercise”. Aron responded, “No Meir, I insist, why should you stra...
"The Rabbinical Council of America today takes a major step forward toward alleviating the suffering of those who cannot successfully end marriages due to the refusal of one of the parties to participate in effecting a Jewish divorce," said Rabbi Shalom Baum, president of the RCA. A resolution adopted by the RCA now requires "each of its members [to] utilize, in any wedding at which he is the officiant (mesader kiddushin), in addition to a ketubah, a rabbinically-sanctioned prenuptial agreement, where available, that aids in our community's efforts to ensure the timely and unconditional issuance of a get."  According to Jewish law, both the husband and the wife must participate willingly in the delivery and acceptance of a get, a Jewish divorce document,...
We regret to inform you of the tragic Petira of 11-year-old Dovi Sass Z”L, who was struck in the head by a baseball last week. As had reported, Dovi was playing baseball near his home in Edmonton, Canada, when the horrible tragedy occurred. Tens of thousands of people were Mispallel for his recovery, and people donated Tzedakah in the merit of his speedy recovery. A campaign was launched on The Chesed Fund to raise money for Hachnosas Kallah in his Zechus. Klal Yisroel in its incredible act of caring for another Jew in pain donated $65,000 in just FOUR days. More than 950 people – most of whom do not know this precious Neshama or his family – donated graciously in his merit. This money will surely be a Zechus for his Neshama, as he ascends to Shomayim. Unfort...
A tractor-trailer crash is blocking all lanes on the George Washington Bridge's upper level to New Jersey
Welcome back, dear friends!! As you know, the Jewish Holidays are coming up in just a few short weeks!! The whole month of October will be filled with incredibly festive and joyous days this year! Of course we know that any celebration we partake in involves lots of cooking. And we love the cooking…. Yes, we really do…… And the shopping…. Oh, how we enjoy the shopping…. Oh joyous day! Can’t wait for it all to start!!! One of the worst things (in my humble opinion) that can possibly happen to a balebusta when she is busily preparing her culinary masterpieces is to find out she is missing an ingredient. There she is, chugging right along baking her favorite apple cake…“okay, eggs… great, 2 eggs, DONE! Now, let me get the ...
The Rabbinical Council of America strongly objects to the latest decisions of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel's office rejecting the endorsement of leading rabbinic figures in North America of the status of four converts.  While we have worked assiduously with the Rabbinate in the past to assure the integrity of converts, recent missteps by its office have led to these latest decisions; we are working to reverse them. Rabbi Shalom Bau, president of the RCA, said, "We have already begun an investigation into this latest disgrace and we demand a thorough  report of how this could happen." This decision by the Chief Rabbinate is especially egregious because it challenges the rulings of one of the preeminent halachic authorities, Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, shlit"a, who serves a...
The trial of Kendall Felix, the man accused of helping to murder Brooklyn-landlord Menachem Stark, is coming to an end. The jury is deliberating as of Friday morning. Attorneys delivered their closing arguments yesterday, and it was a tense day for nearly everyone involved. The only exception? Felix himself, who fell asleep during court, The New York Post reported today. It was during the prosecutor Howard Jackson’s summation that Felix decided to doze. Jackson acknowledged that the state does not yet have sufficient evidence to convict the two people they suspect Felix worked with. However, Jackson said that this wasn’t a concern for Felix’s own trial. “The defendant is the only one you can place at each critical and important step [of Stark’s murd...
Yes, yes, I get it. “Ethnic cleansing” conjures images of Nazi expulsions and murders of Jews, or the 1990s Bosnian war, when Serb and Croat forces intimidated, forcibly expelled or massacred one another to ensure Serb-free or Croat-free territories. But, like many charged terms, the expression has come to be applied as well to more benign, but still pernicious, attempts to remove populations from areas where they have lived for years, in the interest of creating a mono-ethnic state. And that is precisely how Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu used the term when noting that Palestinian leaders envision a Jew-free Palestinian state. As recently as 2013, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas said in Cairo that, “In a final resolution, we would not ...
In his final days with his beloved nation, Moshe tries to give proper instruction to his beloved people. “Now if you give ear to the voice of the Lord your God, and keep with care all these orders which I have given you today, then the Lord your God will put you high over all the nations of the earth: And all these blessings will come on you and overtake you, if your ears are open to the voice of the Lord your God. A blessing will be on you in the town, and a blessing in the field. A blessing will be on the fruit of your body, and on the fruit of your land, on the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herd, and the young of your flock. A blessing will be on your basket and on your bread-basin.  You shall be blessed when you come and blessed when you depart (Devorim 28:2-6)...
David, a resident of Kiryat Malachi, was surprised this past week to find an anonymous letter in his mailbox, with only his family name on it. When he opened the envelope, he was confused to find bills totaling ₪ 1500 and a brief note that read: “Three years ago, I banged into your car. At the time, I had serious financial problems, was struggling with my income, and could not afford to pay you as I should have. I would like to express my regret and apologize for causing you distress. I beg your forgiveness. Enclosed is money that I hope will be enough to make up for the distress I have caused you. Again, I hope you will forgive me. ” David was very touched by the gesture of the unknown individual, but he is seeking the sender, because he wants to return the...
Citing ‘battlefield sources,’ state media says its warships bombed 30 officers from Israel, Qatar and Western countries Russian state media reported that Israeli Mossad agents and other foreign military officers were killed in Aleppo on Tuesday in a Russian missile strike  According to the Arabic-language version of Russia’s Sputnik news agency, some “30 Israeli and Western officers” died when they were hit by three Kalibr cruise missiles fired by Russian warships in a “foreign officers’ coordination operations room” in western Aleppo, near Mount Simeon. In addition to the Mossad agents, the Russian report claimed, military officials from the United States, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Turkey — virtually every cou...

Pollard says health improved, does not believe he will be allowed to visit Israel. Jonathan Pollard recently expressed pessimism regarding his chances of coming home to Israel. In an exclusive interview with Channel 1's Amir Bar-Shalom, Pollard said his health had improved greatly since his release. In answer to the question of whether the Israeli government had abandoned him, Pollard replied, "The nation is with me." He also said that it would take a miracle for the American government to agree to lower their restrictions on his activities. Pollard was arrested in 1985, on charges of spying for Israel. Despite his deteriorating health, and the fact that his information went to a friendly country (spies from hostile countries served less prison time), decades of American p...
(AFP). Pulitzer prize-winning historian Saul Friedlander, a world authority on the Holocaust, said Friday he would leave the United States if Donald Trump was elected president. The 83-year-old Israeli-American writer, who escaped the Nazis by being hidden in a Catholic boarding school in France, described Trump as a “dangerous crazy”. He said the controversial Republican candidate could win November’s election because of Hillary Clinton’s “tendency to lie and to hide things”. “One cannot exclude Donald Trump winning even though he is a dangerous crazy,” he told AFP. “He says whatever comes into his mind.” Friedlander’s magisterial two-volume history of Nazi Germany and the Jews charts Adolf Hitler’s rise t...

Before Rosh haShannah we read brochos and klollos of Mishna Torah. Why did Chazal make such a chiyuv? As we approach Rosh Hashono, we approach the Yom Hadin. We have to take serious inventory about what our yiddishkeit means to us, what Torah means to us, and how are we measuring up to what the Torah demands of us. The brochos and klolos of Mishna Torah begin with an introduction. There was a first bris made between Klal Yisroel and Hashem on Har Sinai, and a second bris is being made in Arvos Moav with the new generation of the Jewish People 40 years later who will be entering into Eretz Yisroel. It is a whole different situation and period of history. When Klal Yisroel left Egypt, they were formed and fashioned as a people through kabbolas HaTorah. They spent 40 years in a barren dese...
