New York -  Wal-Mart is trying to get a jump on Amazon’s second annual sales bonanza. The world’s largest retailer is offering a free 30-day trial on its two-day unlimited shipping service, and an extra month free for paying members, starting Wednesday as it looks to sharpen its attack against the online leader. Beginning Friday, it will also offer discounts on an array of products that will ramp up as July goes by. These discounts, or what Wal-Mart calls “rollbacks,” typically last 90 days or longer. Wal-Mart’s moves come as Amazon is expected to launch for the second year a sales bonanza called Prime Day, which it has touted as bigger than “Black Friday.” It underscores how serious Wal-Mart is about boosting its online sales, whic...
A shouting match erupted on the floor of the Knesset on Wednesday during an address by Joint List MK Hanin Zoabi following the government’s ratification of a reconciliation deal with Turkey. Zoabi, who is known for her outspoken opposition to Zionism and support for pro-Hamas activities, participated in the 2010 “Gaza flotilla” which attempted to break Israel’s security blockade on the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip. Onboard the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmara as it attempted to run the blockade, Zoabi was briefly arrested. The Mavi Marmara incident, during which 10 pro-Hamas Turkish terrorists were killed while attacking Israeli soldiers, was a catalyst for the diplomatic rupture between Ankara and Jerusalem, leading to six years of tensions between the form...
New York - Supporters of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump are more likely to describe African Americans as “criminal,” “unintelligent,” “lazy” and “violent” than voters who backed some Republican rivals in the primaries or who support Democratic contender Hillary Clinton, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll. Ahead of the Nov. 8 election to replace Barack Obama, the first black U.S. president, the poll also showed significant numbers of Americans in both the Republican and Democratic parties view blacks more negatively than whites, harbor anxiety about living in diverse neighborhoods and are concerned that affirmative action policies discriminate against whites. Republicans in the survey expressed these concerns to a g...
Istanbul - Walking through Istanbul airport to their planes hours after suicide bombers killed 41 people with gunfire and explosives, travelers could almost trace the steps of the attackers from the bullet holes and twisted metal still in full view. Workers replaced ceiling panels, cleanup crews swept up debris, and water trucks washed pavements outside, but blood stains and shattered windows were still visible as the departure halls filled again and armed police roamed in kevlar vests. Turkish Airlines resumed services in and out of Europe’s third-busiest airport within 12 hours of Tuesday night’s attacks, although many flights were rescheduled and it offered refunds to passengers booked via Istanbul for the next five days if they no longer wanted to travel. It w...

Istanbul - Officials on Wednesday morning began assessing the damage caused at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport by three suicide bombers who killed dozens and wounded more than 140. Workers were brought in to remove debris left by the blast, while in the daylight the damage to the terminal became clearer with even ceiling panels hit. The airport was partially reopened, with the information board inside the airport showing that about one third of scheduled flights have been canceled, with a host of others delayed. The victims included at least 23 Turkish citizens and 13 foreigners. The death toll excluded the three bombers, who arrived in a taxi and eventually blew themselves up after coming under fire, according to the government, though there were conflicting reports about e...

The New Jersey General Assembly on Monday passed legislation that prohibits the state from investing in pension and annuity funds that boycott the State of Israel or Israeli businesses. The bill was approved in a 69-3 vote, with two abstentions. The New Jersey Senate passed similar legislation in May.  “This bill ensures the State of New Jersey will not support those that participate in campaigns fueled by intolerance and anti-Semitism—like the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. New Jersey legislators took a clear stand against the bigotry and discrimination of BDS, which singles out only Israel,” said Avi Posnick, northeast managing director of the pro-Israel education group StandWithUs. Trade between New Jersey and Israel amounts to m...
Western nations on Monday refused to participate in the Agenda Item 7 debate at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The debate is a permanent agenda item that mandates discussion of any possible Israeli human rights abuses against Palestinians. Agenda Item 7 is debated three times a year. For the last three years, Israel has been asking countries to boycott the debate on the agenda item. In the past, some Western states have participated in the debate, including a few European nations, but this time those countries opted out. The United States has always boycotted the Agenda Item 7 debate. Pakistan’s deputy representative to the U.N., Aamar Aftab Qureshi, urged “all member states to actively participate in Agenda Item 7,” adding that t...
With Europe sent into crisis mode following the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union on Thursday, the ability of the regional bloc to deal with Mideast issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, will be weakened — something that could have both positive and negative consequences for the Jewish state — experts from the Israeli think-tank the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) claimed this week.  In an analysis piece published by the INSS on Monday, Senior Research Fellow Oded Eran and Neubauer Research Associate Vera Michlin-Shapir wrote:
Europe will be preoccupied with keeping the Union together, blocking the possibility of disintegration, both by internal forces and by Russia...
A digital activist has turned the tables on neo-Nazi and white supremacist trolls by using their own tool to track and identify their antisemitic activity online, news and culture site Fusion reported on Tuesday. According to the report, using the same technology behind the now-banned “Coincidence Detector,” Daniel Sieradski has found a way to out antisemites who launch attacks on Jews and their allies with his “Nazi Detector.” As reported by The Algemeiner earlier in June, Google Chrome pulled the innocuous-sounding neo-Nazi plug-in after it was revealed that it was being used to track Jews online. Using a special web construction called an “(((echo)))” — three parentheses around the names of targets — white supr...
Jordan’s condemnation of Israel for Muslim disturbances on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem justifies and encourages Palestinian violence, an Israeli lawmaker and longtime advocate for the right of Jews to pray at their holiest site told The Algemeiner on Tuesday. Knesset Member Rabbi Yehuda Glick was responding to a statement issued Monday by a government spokesman in Amman, demanding that “Israel immediately stop all the escalating actions.”  Glick — who survived an assassination attempt in October 2014 at the hands of a Palestinian terrorist — slammed Jordan for ignoring the actions of radical Islamists and accusing Israel of stirring up unrest at the holy site. “The guilty parties are those who commit and ...
At least 10 Israelis were at the airport in Turkey at the time of Tuesday’s terrorist attack, Israel’s Channel 2 reported, in the immediate aftermath of the triple suicide-bombing and shooting assault, which left at least 41 people dead and another 130 wounded, many critically. According to the report, the Israelis were part of a group on the way home from an organized tour to Morocco, and Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport was a stopover. “The minute we arrived at the terminal, chaos erupted,” one of the members of the group told Channel 2. “We saw masses of people who had been standing in line for a security check running, screaming and fleeing every which way through the terminal to [seek refuge] in offices, bathroom, wherever they could. ...
Mineola, NY - Scientists have deployed a buoy 22 miles off the coast of New York’s Fire Island to monitor several species of great whales in “near real-time.” The high-tech acoustic device will eavesdrop on the songs of the whales to better understand and safeguard their movements near two busy shipping lanes entering New York Harbor. “We know they’re there, but we know very little about them,” said Dr. Howard Rosenbaum, director of Wildlife Conservation Society’s Ocean Giants Program. His New York-based organization, in collaboration with the New York Aquarium, has teamed with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts on the research project. Scientists last week deployed the buoy, which is four feet in diameter with a m...
Vilnius - Israel’s antiquities authority says an international research team has located a tunnel in Lithuania dug by Jewish prisoners trying to escape their Nazi captors during World War II. The authority said Wednesday the team from Israel, the U.S., Canada and Lithuania used mineral and oil exploration scanning technology to pinpoint the tunnel. The 35-meter (115-foot) long tunnel is located in the Ponar forest, known today as Paneriai, where the Nazis killed some 100,000 people. Toward the end of the war, prisoners were brought from the Stutthof concentration camp and forced to burn the bodies. Secretly, they dug the underground tunnel out of a pit they were kept in. Forty prisoners escaped through the tunnel in 1944. Many were shot, but 11 reached partisan forces and ...
