London - Britain’s Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn says he won’t resign despite a vote of no confidence from his party’s lawmakers. Corbyn said Tuesday the vote has no constitutional legitimacy. He said he will not “betray” his supporters by resigning. The main opposition party’s lawmakers earlier passed an overwhelming vote of no confidence and many called for him to step down as party leader. He has been criticized severely for his weak performance during the European Union referendum campaign, which ended with Britain voting to leave the EU. The Labour Party backed staying in the bloc but many said Corbyn campaigned poorly. He may now face a formal leadership contest.
A recent opinion piece featured in South Africa’s The Mail and Guardian accused Israel of carrying out crimes similar to those of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, media watchdog HonestReporting revealed on Monday.  The author of the op-ed, Aayesha J. Soni, is a South African physician and vice-chairperson of the Media Review Network — an organization that believes “Muslim perspectives on issues impacting on South Africans are a prerequisite to a better appreciation of Islam.”   Calling Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon’s recent appointment to chair the world body’s Law (Sixth) Committee a “horrible irony,” she accused the Jewish state of breaking “more UN resolutions than any other...
Brussels - British Prime Minister David Cameron fended off anger from other European Union leaders at an unprecedented summit charged with uncertainty about the union’s future without Britain. Leader after leader rejected Cameron’s pleas for favorable conditions for Britain once it leaves, while he frustrated them by refusing to initiate the divorce proceedings just yet. At what may be his last EU gathering, Cameron sat at one end of the oval summit table in blue shirt sleeves, arguing for the best possible exit conditions for his island nation. Around the table, other EU leaders refused to negotiate, seemingly eager to kick Britain out as soon as possible to avoid further political and economic turmoil after the shock and emotion of the British vote to leave last we...
Glynco, GA - Covering their ears, 192 future airport security officers watched from a grandstand as Larry Colburn detonates a plastic-explosives device like the one carried by the underwear bomber in a failed attempt to blow up a plane on Christmas Day 2009. A tremendous boom was accompanied by a plume of black and gray smoke. A wave of blast pressure ripples through the air, hitting the spectators. Colburn, a former Memphis police bomb squad commander, tells his audience that a very small amount of the explosive, PTEN, can do tremendous damage. “That is an eye-opener,” says Betsy Bueno. “That makes you want to do the job.” Bueno is joining the Transportation Security Administration, the agency responsible for protecting the traveling public from terro...
Jerusalem - Long-serving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a potentially formidable challenge to his hard-line rule — not from Israel’s civilian politicians but instead from its revered security establishment. An extraordinary array of former top commanders are criticizing Netanyahu in increasingly urgent terms, accusing him of mishandling the Palestinian issue and allying with extremists bent on dismantling Israel’s democracy. On Tuesday, a group representing more than 200 retired leaders in Israel’s military, police, Mossad spy service and Shin Bet security agency presented a plan to help end the half-century occupation of the Palestinians through unilateral steps, including disavowing claims to over 90 percent of the West Bank and freezing Jewis...
New York - A cowboy who tied up traffic by riding a horse across a busy bridge connecting New York City and New Jersey says he is traversing the country to raise money and awareness for child hunger. Tod Mishler, 80, was followed across the Outerbridge Crossing on Monday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police. Once he was safely across the bridge, officers issued him two criminal court summonses, for trespassing and impeding traffic. A video sent to the Staten Island Advance newspaper showed Mishler sporting a cowboy hat, a brown vest and a red kerchief and riding quickly toward Staten Island. New Jersey-bound traffic slowed as motorists stopped to watch. The rider held the reins of the second horse laden down with bags. “My dream is to ride across the co...
Washington - President Barack Obama isn’t expecting “major, cataclysmic changes” as a result of Britain’s pending exit from the European Union. Speaking to NPR, Obama also said there are more differences than similarities when it comes to Britain’s election compared with the current presidential election in the United States where discontent has fueled Republican Donald Trump’s rise. Obama says Europe hasn’t fared as well as the United States since the financial crisis that struck in 2008, and there was some belief that the European Union was moving too fast and without as much consensus as it should. “I think that the best way to think about this is, a pause button has been pressed on the project of full European integration,&rdq...
“The third Intifada will inflame the Zionist regime’s security and life,” the head of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic announced on Tuesday, the country’s semi-official state news agency Fars reported. Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi made this declaration at a ceremony in Tehran, ahead of International Quds Day, an event on behalf of the Palestinians held in Iran on the last Friday of every Ramadan. According to Fars, Firouzabadi also accused Israel of trying to accelerate the “judaization of the West Bank and the occupied city of Quds [Jerusalem],” by taking advantage of regional events that have been keeping the “Islamic resistance” busy in wars in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. The “Zionist attempts a...
The reconciliation deal between Israel and Turkey will likely boost commercial activity between the two countries. Uri Aldubi, chairman of the Association of Oil and Gas Exploration Industries in Israel, told Israel Hayom on Monday that the deal “creates a historic opportunity to boost cooperation on energy projects with Cyprus and Egypt, be it for domestic consumption [in those countries] or for further exportation to Europe.” Turkey, Aldubi noted, currently relies on Iran and Russia for natural gas. In 2015, the scope of Israeli exports to Turkey dropped by about 40 percent, while bilateral trade shrunk by 24 percent from 2014. Despite the new chapter in Turkish-Israeli relations, it might take a while before Israeli tourists head en masse to Turkish resorts. During...
Volkswagen will settle its emissions scandal case for $14.7 billion, the largest payout by an automaker to consumers in U.S. history, in an agreement set to be formally announced Tuesday morning, according to two people familiar with the matter. More than $10 billion of the settlement will go to fix or buy back 475,000 Volkswagens with two-liter diesel engines that were programmed to turn off emissions measurement data outside of laboratory settings, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced. Those engines spewed 40 times the legal limit of harmful nitrogen oxides. Another $2.7 billion will go into an Environmental Protection Agency trust fund for environmental remediation, and the German automaker will spend $2 billion more...
Spirit Airlines is the carrier that leads the pack when it comes to customer gripes. With that in mind, its new boss is trying to repair one crucial aspect of the business: getting to your destination on time. Spirit operated only 68 percent of its flights on time for the 12 months ended April 2016, as defined by the U.S. metric of a flight that gets to the gate within 14 minutes of scheduled arrival. Chief Executive Officer Bob Fornaro says he’s been focused on reliability since his first day on the job six months ago. So has his board: In January, they amended executive compensation plans for 2016 to give on-time rate a 20 percent weighting in calculating managers’ bonuses, up from 10 percent. “Over the years, we’ve never put enough emphasis on service,...

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker had a message for Britain on Tuesday. He delivered it in French. With the impending British exit from the European Union, the polyglot Babel that has 24 official languages may soon strike English off the list, according to officials here, who note the change with a mixture of sadness and glee. The European Union long conducted its business in French, even for decades after Britain and Ireland joined the bloc in 1973. But as the alliance expanded into Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, the momentum moved ineluctably toward English, the second language of choice for a far wider number of European citizens, diplomats and leaders. English is the common tongue at summits such as the one taking place Tuesday, when the leaders of EU member...

Prime minister, internal security minister, discuss escalating Muslim violence; ban on MKs visiting to continue at least into next week. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan Tuesday afternoon, to discuss ongoing Muslim violence on the Temple Mount. On Sunday, Islamist groups launched a campaign of organized violence on the holy site, using the Al Aqsa Mosque as a base to launch rock-throwing attacks against security forces and Jewish visitors, in a bid to prevent all visits by non-Muslims to the site during Ramadan. The riots continued over Monday and into Tuesday - when an elderly Jewish women praying at the Western Wall was wounded by a rock thrown by Muslim extremists from the Temple Mount plaza above. Responding to the escalat...
After rampant speculation, Senator Elizabeth Warren is now formally being vetted by Hillary Clinton’s team as a possible pick for vice president. ABC News cited an unnamed source involved in the process to confirm the news on Monday, after Warren campaigned alongside Clinton earlier in the day. Warren, who has publicly slammed Republican candidate Donald Trump for “racism” and “xenophobia,” endorsed Clinton for president in early June. Speculation about Warren’s potential role as vice president has intensified throughout Clinton’s campaign. The pair would make history as the first two women to lead the White House. Read more at ABC News.
Reb Yitzchok Meir Weisberger, z”l was born in Yerushalayim to his parents, Reb Yisrael Yaakov and Mrs. Henya (Fischman) Weisberger. Reb Yitzchok Meir was exposed to Torah and avodah from a very young age. He would relate to his children how, as a young child, from his window, he would watch the Brisker Rov studying in his room until the wee hours of the morning. A Washington Post analysis found that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump may have repeatedly lied about his charitable giving. Reporters found evidence of only one donation from Trump between 2008 and this May: a gift from 2009 of somewhere between $5,000 and $9,999 to the Police Athletic League of New York City. Trump gave $1 million to a nonprofit group for veterans’ families in May after the media began to ask why he had not yet sent the money he had promised. The business mogul makes promises of donations all the time, including about $8.5 million from his business enterprises over a 15-year period. In that same time frame, public records show that he donated only about $2.8 million through his foundation. The last record of any gift from Trump’s person...
Chareidi journalist Shlomo Menachem Kook recently represented Sefardi Chief Rabbi Rav Yitzchak Yosef at the 14th International Conference of Religions against Terrorism held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Speaking before representatives of Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in Rav Yosef’s name, Kook cited Rashi‘s comments on the posuk, “I will put peace on the land” (Vayikra 26:6), that without peace all other blessings are worthless. He also noted that religious terrorism is the most dangerous of all terrorism, for while a regular terrorist may eventually regret his actions, the religious terrorist feels he is fulfilling a religious command and never regrets his crimes. Kook also pointed out that in contrast to extreme Islam, Judaism never forces anyone...
Families of captive Avera Mengistu and MIAs Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul disappointed after meeting with PM Netanyahu. Prime Minister Netanyahu met today (Tuesday) with the families of IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, whose bodies are being held by the Hamas terrorist organization, and with the family of Israeli civilian Avera Mengistu who is being held by Hamas in Gaza. The meeting came after increased protests by the families and the wider public in the wake of the deal with Turkey. The families are frustrated that the agreement does not include the return of the captives by Hamas. "The Prime Minister gave an explanation and reasons which I am not at liberty to disclose," said Ilan Mengistu, brother of Avera, "but we are still of the opinion that they have completely i...
