During the Nazi occupation of Rome between September 1943 and June 1944, the city was struck by a mysterious epidemic, Haaretz reports. A previously unknown and highly contagious disease, the “K syndrome,” forced the Fatebenefratelli hospital to isolate dozens of infected patients in a special wing, completely inaccessible to outsiders. The fictitious illness kept dozens of Roman Jews safe from the Nazis who were hunting them down. The letter “K” was a reference to Albert Kesselring, the German officer in charge of the city. A young doctor, Adriano Ossicini, came up with the idea and the other staff played along, saving at least 40 lives. More than a thousand Roman Jews were arrested and deported to death camps. Ossicini told La Stampa, “We were tel...
'US and Israel face exactly the same threat', claims 'America's leadership directly affects every Israeli'. Americans and Israelis face “exactly the same” threat from radical Islam, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said on Sunday, arguing that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump would do much more for American security – and Israel – than Barack Obama. Following the devastating terror attack in Orlando which left 49 dead and 53 wounded...
At least seven people were injured – several of whom were stabbed – Sunday when friction between neo-Nazi and counter demonstrators in Sacramento turned violent. Seven patients were transported to area hospitals, “some with critical trauma stab wounds,” the Sacramento Fire Department said. No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, but the original, permitted neo-Nazi rally was officially cancelled, ABC10 reported. That rally was to include factions from the Traditionalist Workers Party, Golden State Skinheads, Blood & Honor, National Socia...

Tensions are mounting between Jerusalem City Hall and chareidi parties in the coalition as additional businesses opened their doors this past Shabbos in the ‘Mitcham HaTachana’ complex, the old Jerusalem train center that has been converted into a mall. Councilman (Agudas Yisrael) Yochanan Weitzman addressed his concerns in an email on motzei Shabbos to party colleagues and the Vaad Rabbonim for Shmiras Shabbos. Weizman added a play area for children was operating in violation as well, adding he was unable to determine if they were taking an entry fee for visitors to the play area as is done during the week. As the Chief Rabbinate of Israel probes ways to improve the state kashrus system, one of the ideas being floated is to license private hashgachos, with the latter employing the mashgichim that will provide supervision. The private hashgachos would sign a contract with the Chief Rabbinate, acting as an outside contractor, committing to provide hashgacha on the level detailed by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. The Chief Rabbinate would employ inspectors who would randomly monitor implementation of the kashrus and the Chief Rabbinate would maintain the right to cancel the hashgacha of a business and oust the private hashgacha for failing to maintain the proper standard. In a recent ruling of the High Court of Justice, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel was given the exclusive control of kosher su...
Jerusalem - Michal Froman, a pregnant Israeli woman stabbed by a 16-year-old Palestinian terrorist five months ago, gave birth to a girl on Saturday in the Jerusalem hospital of Hadassah Ein Karem. Froman, 32 and a mother of five, is the daughter-in-law of the late Rabbi Menachem Froman, who was rabbi of Tekoa for many years and became famous for his engagement in friendly relations with Palestinians and promoting interfaith dialogue between Jews and Muslims. Although the whole Froman family – Menachem’s wife, Hadassah, and sons – are involved in interfaith activities, Michal was not really part of it before the terror attack. But now, she tells Tazpit Press Service (TPS), things have changed for her. “The terrorist who attacked me did not look like some ...
A group of East Coast states wants to help overhaul the way America pays for its decaying roads, and it’s starting with Monopoly money. Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire are proposing pilots to figure out how they might charge motorists a fee for the miles they travel – rather than taxing their gas, as state and federal officials do today. The I-95 Corridor Coalition, which represents transportation officials from 16 states and the District of Columbia, applied for a federal grant last month to test the idea. Officials would stitch together the policies and technologies needed to count the miles driven by 50 recruits from each of the four states, including state legislators, transportation officials or other willing guinea pigs. They would send out &ldq...

Beirut - A graphic video emerged Sunday showing the killing of five Syrian media activists captured by the Islamic State group last year. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the five were abducted in October and are believed to have been killed in December over their coverage of events in the eastern Syrian city of Deir el-Zour, half of which is held by IS. The head of the Observatory, Rami Abdurrahman, said news of the detention and killing of the activists was withheld because no bodies had surfaced and the families feared retribution for reporting the deaths. In the video, an IS narrator says the group is facing a media war and warns against reporting to the “crusaders” and “enemies of God.” The narrator says journalists who rep...
Washington -  Republicans are sprinting to shape up Donald Trump’s presidential campaign before the party’s national convention in three weeks, even as leading members of the party carry a deep antipathy or outright opposition to his claim on the GOP nomination. His campaign chairman said Sunday there’s a hiring spree in 16 states and the campaign is working with the Republican National Committee to solidify other matters. Paul Manafort said Trump is not all that involved in the race to organize an offensive against Democrat Hillary Clinton and catch up to her massive fundraising advantage. “The good thing is we have a candidate who doesn’t need to figure out what’s going on (inside the campaign ) in order to say what he wants to do,&rdqu...

Washington -  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Donald Trump needs to raise much more money, quickly, if he expects to win the presidential campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Asked on ABC’s “This Week” whether the presumptive GOP nominee can win with the paltry fundraising he reported last month, McConnell says, “No…he needs to catch up and catch up fast.” Campaign finance reports show Trump entered June with just $1.3 million in the bank. Clinton’s war chest at the same time was $42 million. Trump has said his fund-raising will show improvement for the next reporting period. McConnell also refused to say whether Trump is qualified to be president. And he suggested he doesn’t expect the GOP platform to refl...

A successful appeal against New York University’s (NYU) Graduate Student Union’s (GSOC) motion in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has great implications in the fight against the global anti-Israel movement, students who led the appeal campaign told The Algemeiner on Friday. Ilana Ben-Ezra and Samuel Zerin — members of GSOC for Open Dialogue on Israel and Palestine — said they applaud United Auto Workers International’s (UAW) decision against empowering the April GSOC BDS motion, which they claimed violated the UAW’s constitutional bylaws. UAW is the parent union of the Graduate Student Union. According to UAW, GSOC’s BDS resolution “is contrary to the position of the International Union.” Cit...
