Fort Meade, MD - A pre-trial hearing for five Sept. 11 suspects began on Monday at Guantanamo Bay, with prisoners’ treatment expected to be a focus of the U.S. military court sessions. Forty-two motions are scheduled for the week-long hearing at the Navy base in Cuba. They include multiple requests by defense lawyers for evidence of how the five suspects were treated at secret Central Intelligence Agency prisons. James Connell, a defense lawyer, told Judge Army Colonel James Pohl that medical records provided by the prosecution had been insufficient, lacking personal identifying information and a chronology of patient care. “This is not the way that discovery is supposed to work ... the medical records are actually extremely important,” said Connell, who repr...
Washington - Edward Snowden performed a “public service” in stoking a national debate about secret domestic surveillance programs, but he should still return to the U.S. to stand trial, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a podcast released on Monday. As a National Security Agency contractor, Snowden leaked classified details in 2013 of the U.S. government’s warrantless surveillance of its citizens before fleeing the country. He now lives in Russia and faces U.S. charges that could land him in prison for up to 30 years. In a podcast interview with CNN political commentator David Axelrod, Holder said that Snowden had grown concerned that the domestic spying programs weren’t providing a “substantial” return of useful intelligence ev...
Newark, NJ - The truck-size metal container sitting in a downtown park here isn’t meant to raise awareness about the global shipping industry, though it may nudge some people’s curiosity in that direction. Step into the carpeted interior, and it’s something completely different: a combination of an art installation and social science research project that lets people converse with others in far-flung regions of the world, on a life-size screen. The gold-painted shipping container in Newark’s revived Military Park is the hub of a 10-week pilot program sponsored by Shared Studios, an arts and technology collective, in collaboration with local arts group Gateway Project Spaces and researchers at Rutgers-Newark and Yale University. The program has two basic ...
Washington - Jack Crowley was 15 when a baseball hit him in the chest and stopped his heart. The Long Island teen survived thanks to a police officer who grabbed a defibrillator and shocked his heart back into rhythm. A blow to the chest — one that hits at just the wrong spot, at just the wrong time — can trigger deadly cardiac arrest. Fortunately it’s rare. But most victims are otherwise healthy kid athletes. And survival hinges on fast use of those heart-zapping defibrillators that not every athletic league or school keeps near the playing fields. There soon may be another attempt at protection: A U.S. organization that oversees athletic equipment has proposed the first performance standard for chest protectors to reduce the risk from those blows, a step tha...

Baltimore, MD – May 30, 2016 – Today, the Tudor Heights family had the distinct privilege of throwing a 100th birthday party for one of its residents. Spry, and funny as could be, Sylvia Schaffer or “C ME” as she likes to be called, was born on May 13th 1916 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. She lived with her parents and older sister, Ida, at 819 South Exeter Street near Lombard Street. She graduated high school from Eastern High and began to work in a factory cleaning garments and removing cotton from the clothing. She then moved on to work for the famous Sears and Roebuck where she was complimented on her ability to “seal the deal.” When she first started working she was bringing home $7 a week. At the end of 20 years working there she was making $200...
Avidgor Liberman, Israel’s new defense minister, has engendered some controversy because of his hardline views. Another criticism, however, has been that he lacks the impressive military experience shared by most of his predecessors in the post. Liberman did indeed serve in the IDF, but only reached the lowly rank of corporal. His undistinguished military service has prompted the quip circulating in the papers these days that the closest Liberman has come to a projectile whizzing by his head has been on the tennis court. This is not the first time that Liberman’s well-known love for tennis has been an issue in his political career. In 2015, The Jerusalem Post ran a piece about a Facebook video showing Liberman, a sitting member of the Knesset, playing tennis in the ...

Following Abdeslam’s capture, police discovered plans to attack football fans in Marseille where England will play Russia next month in the Euro 2016. Authorities fear that ISIS followers will execute the attacks outlined despite Abdeslam’s arrest. Plans include suicide bombings and large scale shooting attacks on the tens of thousands of fans who are expected to flock to the city for England’s opening match. Marseille’s busy Old Port, home to many of the c...
Cincinnati - The director of the Cincinnati Zoo on Monday stood by the decision to shoot dead a gorilla as he dragged a 4-year-old boy around by the ankle, saying the ape was not simply endangering the child who fell into his enclosure but actually hurting him. “Looking back, we would make the same decision” to shoot the gorilla, Thayne Maynard, director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens, told a news conference. “The gorilla was clearly agitated. The gorilla was clearly disoriented,” Maynard said. The boy’s head was banging on the concrete as he was being dragged through the enclosure, which was one factor in the decision to shoot Harambe, the Western lowland gorilla, whose species is listed as endangered. Animal lovers mobilized on Mon...
Father gives harrowing account of how he tried to stop his son's bleeding after he was stabbed by an Arab with a screwdriver. The father of the 19-year-old soldier who was stabbed and lightly wounded by an Arab terrorist in Tel Aviv on Monday evening later reenacted the moments of horror. "I'm still stressed from what I saw. I drove home and I saw him (my son) holding his head, shouting 'dad, dad, a terrorist stabbed me, call an ambulance,'" recalled the father. "Immediately I went up on the sidewalk, I stopped the motorcycle, brought him up to the house and I said, 'I'll stop the bleeding.' He was pumping blood." The father told Maariv that he brought his son inside the house and then his neighbor called up Magen David Adom (MDA)....
Knesset votes 55 to 43 to approve Yisrael Beytenu chief as Defense Minister. The Knesset voted on Monday to approve Avigdor Liberman’s appointment as Defense Minister. The Yisrael Beytenu chief was approved 55 to 43 in a Knesset vote that largely followed party lines. One member of the governing Likud party, however, abstained from the vote – Benny Begin. Yisrael Beytenu’s other ministerial appointment was also approved by the Knesset on Monday. Sofa Landver was approved as Minister of Aliyah – a position of particular importance for the Yisrael Beytenu party, which relies heavily on the support of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. A third appointment was also voted upon and approved by the Knesset Monday evening: Tzachi HaNegbi was approved as Min...
Tel Aviv, Israel (CNN)As security concerns mount at international airports, more security officials are turning to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport to understand what it does differently. The airport, considered one of the safest in the world, has layers of security, only partially visible to the 16 million passengers who pass through every year. No flight leaving the airport has ever been hijacked, and there has not been a terrorist attack at the airport since 1972, when three members of the Japanese Red Army killed 26 people and wounded dozens more in a shooting rampage. The security begins in the Airport Security Operations Center, located near the airport. The small room, staffed 24/7, monitors every flight in Israeli airspace, including transit flights and nea...
The case goes back to the days after the military’ An Egyptian court has convicted and sentenced 36 Islamists, including a top leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, to life imprisonment. The state-run MENA news agency says Mohamed Badie and the other defendants were sentenced on Monday for inciting violence that led to the killing of three people in July 2013. The case goes back to the days after the military’s ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood member. It’s one in a series of mass trials involving members and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood since they were toppled from power in 2013. Rights groups have criticized Egypt for the mass trials and many death penalties handed down en masse. Badie was given the death penalty in anot...
