Tokyo - Japan put its military on alert on Monday for a possible North Korean ballistic missile firing, while South Korea also said it had detected evidence of launch preparations, officials from Japan and South Korea said. Tension in the region has been high since North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and followed that with a satellite launch and test launches of various missiles. Japan ordered naval destroyers and anti-ballistic missile Patriot batteries to be ready to shoot down any projectile heading for Japan, Japan’s NHK state broadcaster said. A Japanese official, who declined to be identified as he is not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed the order. A spokesmen for Japan’s defense ministry declined to comment. New York - Officials say normal operations are expected at John F. Kennedy Airport’s Terminal 7, one day after a computer outage caused massive check-in delays. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Neal Buccino says Monday that all computers are up and running. On Sunday, a server providing Internet service had problems at about 4 p.m. and the outage required manual check-in. Buccino says Terminal 7 is operated by British Airways, which leases space to other carriers. He says at one point Sunday night, more than 1,000 passengers were waiting in line to get checked in. He says the number dropped to about 80 by midnight. Buccino said the crowds were orderly and that British Airways had been making regular announcements.
Istanbul - Turkey’s foreign minister suggested his country could carry out joint military operations with the United States to oust the Islamic State group from Syria. Speaking in Antalya late Sunday, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that operation could “easily advance to Raqqa,” the main IS bastion in Syria. American special operations forces and a coalition known as the Syria Democratic Forces have begun clearing areas north of Raqqa in preparation for an eventual assault on the city. A major player in the coalition is the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, which Turkey — unlike the United States — views as a terrorist organization. Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against IS and a Turkish air base is being used to lau...
Jerusalem chareidi city councilmen are angered over the fact City Hall has employed a Jewish Shabbos enforcement inspector, who this past Shabbos joined the other inspectors, goyim, in issuing summonses to stores operating illegally on Shabbos. Shas party officials explain that “it is absurd and tantamount to city-sponsored chilul Shabbos” by employing a Jewish inspector who must be mechalel Shabbos to enforce Shabbos closure laws. They are calling on officials to immediately stop employing the Jewish inspector on Shabbos. Councilman (Shas) Michael Michaeli sent an urgent letter to Jerusalem City Manager Amnon Merchav expressing opposition to the stores operating in downtown Jerusalem on Shabbos and the deployment of a Jewish Shabbos inspector. According to the MyNet report, ...

The horrific attack in Armon Hanatziv on March 10, left two women in their 80s moderately wounded. As the group passed the terrorists pounced on them, viciously stabbing the defenseless pensioners repeatedly, before leaving two victims for dead and fleeing the scene. Security forces initiated a massive manhunt and detained two suspects shortly afterwards, but released them later t...
Coinciding with national emergency week, as the IDF determines the level of national preparedness, the National Emergency Authority (NEA) conducted a study to determine just how ready the homefront is today. According to the findings, most Israelis know what to do in the event of massive missile attack or earthquake. However, when it comes to measuring the sense of security, the results are less encouraging with one a quarter of those asked saying they feel safe in the event of a massive missile attack on the homefront — one of the major scenarios included in the week-long nationwide training event. If one wishes to analyze the data by geographical area, the communities along the Gaza border are most prepared and have the greatest feeling of security as a result of years of rocket ...

Baltimore, MD - May 29, 2016 - Lag B’Omer is a day of Jewish unity and celebration so what better way to celebrate than with a multigenerational parade. In what has become an annual event, the students at the Gan at Cheder Chabad paraded down Park Heights Avenue to our neighbors at Weinberg Park Assisted Living. Dressed for the occasion in paper hats and sashes the children rode bikes, trikes, scooters or rode along in a stroller or wagon. Watching over 100 children ages 2-6 parade down the sidewalk was a sight to see and it elicited a warm response from passersby and from the residents at Weinberg Park. Trying to move so many children in close proximity to the street was a safety concern. Cheder Chabad thanks Betsy Gardner and Officer Ken Dickstein for assisting them by blocking of...

Cincinnati - The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo after a 4-year-old boy tumbled into the ape’s enclosure triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice. More than 2,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that sharply criticized the Cincinnati Police Department and the zoo for putting down the animal and called for the child’s parents to be “held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child.” Cincinnati police on Sunday said the parents had not been charged, but that charges could eventually be sought by the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Faceboo...
New York - Billionaires’ Row. That’s what New York real estate experts have dubbed a lineup of a half-dozen new superluxury skyscrapers overlooking Central Park that are home to some of the world’s most expensive apartments. One penthouse on the 89th and 90th floors of a skyscraper near Carnegie Hall that went for more than $100 million seems almost a bargain compared to what will appear next year in a high-rise being built on Central Park South: a 23,000-square-foot, four-story apartment offered at a $250 million. That jaw-dropping price was contained in documents the developer filed with the state attorney general’s office. Floor plans show 16 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, five balconies and a massive terrace. The multi-million dollar question is: Who can af...
Tampa, FL -  Donald Trump calls his presidential campaign a mass movement, but he must show he can coax enough support from voters who twice delivered the White House to Barack Obama. The billionaire businessman depended almost exclusively on conservative and GOP-leaning whites — a majority of them men — to secure the Republican nomination. Now he must look ahead to a wider, more diverse voting population in his likely general election matchup with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. His ability to seize on marginal shifts in the electorate may determine whether he can pull off a victory once unthinkable. Trump’s task is critical to flipping back into the GOP column some of the most contested states that Obama won twice. This challenge is perhaps bes...
Fort Lauderdale, FL - The Libertarian Party again nominated former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson as its presidential candidate Sunday, believing he can challenge presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton because of their poor showing in popularity polls. Johnson, 63, won the nomination on the second ballot at the party’s convention in Orlando, Florida, defeating Austin Petersen, the founder of The Libertarian Republic magazine; and anti-computer virus company founder John McAfee. Johnson told the delegates during his acceptance speech that his job will be to get the Libertarian platform before the voters at a level the party has not seen. “I am fiscally conservative in spades and I am socially liberal in spades,” J...
Jerusalem - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday for signing a presidential decree ordering the return to Israel of an IDF tank that was captured during the First Lebanon War. “I thank the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, that he responded to my request to return the tank from the Battle of Sultan Yacoub to Israel,” Netanyahu said. The tank, used by the IDF during the battle of Sultan Yacoub during the First Lebanon War on June 12, 1982, was captured by the Syrian army and eventually transported to the Soviet Union, then a Cold-War ally with Syria. The tank has since remained in Moscow, stored in a museum of armored tanks. Deputy Defense Minister Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan was an officer in the artille...
Westbury, NY - Police say a Long Island man broke into a grocery store, stole an ATM and loaded it onto a stolen school minibus. Nassau County police say 61-year-old David Hughes broke the glass door of a Bravo supermarket in Westbury early Friday. Police say Hughes grabbed the store’s cash machine and loaded it onto a yellow school bus that he had stolen earlier. Supermarket manager Victor Perez says Hughes was caught on surveillance video sliding the stolen machine into the bus. He says there was about $3,000 in the ATM. Hughes was arrested later Friday in Queens after someone called police to report a suspicious person in a school bus. He was awaiting arraignment Saturday on burglary and grand larceny charges. It wasn’t clear if Hughes had an attorney who could speak...
