The oft-repeated notion that Jews went willingly to the slaughter during the Holocaust is completely unfounded, a Holocaust commemoration activist told The Algemeiner on Thursday, citing a number of documents which were recently uncovered by his organization detailing eye-witness accounts of Jews fighting back. Jonny Daniels, founder and executive director of From the Depths, which works with Holocaust survivors, Jewish communities in Eastern Europe and the Polish government to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, said that one of several projects he is engaged in includes translating first hand accounts that have sat untouched for years in Poland’s governmental archives. Daniels said his organization has “uncovered remarkable documentation that...
My instinctive feeling right now is that Trump is gonna win, beat Hillary badly, that it could be landslide proportions. I still don’t think people understand why Trump won this. I don’t think they understand at all the reason people support Trump. And the deeper people are entrenched in politics, and the more they are accustomed to the templates and the handbooks and the theories and the playbooks, the less they’re gonna understand it. The more they try to plug Donald Trump and his campaign and his personality into the professional politician candidate playbook that they use, the farther and farther from the truth they are going to get. I’ve tried to help. During the course of this entire campaign, I’ve gone to great lengths to try to explain to peo...

Washington - The Federal Bureau of Investigation is likely to interview Hillary Clinton in the next few weeks about her use of a private email server while she was U.S. secretary of state and have already interviewed some of her aides, CNN reported on Thursday. Clinton, who is likely to win the race to become the Democratic Party’s candidate in November’s presidential election, has said she was willing to be interviewed in connection with the FBI’s investigation into whether any laws were broken as a result of the email arrangement. More than 2,000 emails sent and received by Clinton while working as President Barack Obama’s top diplomat include classified information, which the government bans from being handled outside secure, government-controlled chan...
In Arabic TV interview, Labour’s ex-London mayor blames Israel for IS attacks in Europe and mass expulsion of Jews from Arab world, again claims Hitler supported Zionism Former London mayor Ken Livingstone on Wednesday called the creation of Israel “fundamentally wrong,” and “a great catastrophe.” The existence of the Jewish state in the Middle East, he said, could ultimately lead to nuclear war. “The creation of the state of Israel was fundamentally wrong, because there had been a Palestinian community there for 2,000 years,” Livingstone told an Arabic language TV station based in London, in a clip posted and translated by the watchdog MEMRI group. “The creation of the state of Israel was a great catastrophe,” he repeated....
Washington - For some Democrats, Donald Trump may seem to be a gift - set to steer Republicans into a trainwreck election in November - but senior Democrat Harry Reid said on Thursday he worried people might be too confident. “Am I concerned about it? Of course I am,” the U.S. Senate Democratic leader said in a conference call with reporters. “I think this race could be a debacle for the Republicans,” Reid added. “But I’m not taking anything for granted. I’m not being over confident.” Trump effectively clinched the Republican presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election this week after a primary battle that angered many - including in his own party’s establishment - for his bombastic style and proposals such as building a ...
Paris - A French Islamic State cell dismantled in the final stages of planning an attack has yielded a new secret this week, with the release of undercover footage showing how a group of disaffected petty criminals transformed into a terror network. Filmed by a young French Muslim journalist who infiltrated the group with a hidden camera, the Canal Plus documentary takes an extraordinary inside look at the group, which called itself the Soldiers of Allah. The cell was nominally led by a young ex-convict who called himself Abu Oussama, who speaks dreamily about his coming death, the palace that awaits him in paradise, the winged horse made of gold and rubies, and the women: “I’m not making this up, I swear,” he breathes. “I got the feeling they’re be...
Los Angeles - The man who claimed to be the mysterious founder of bitcoin appears to be stepping back into the shadows, leaving numerous questions in his wake. Three days after Australian entrepreneur Craig Wright came forward as “Satoshi Nakamoto,” the unknown creator of the digital currency bitcoin, he has backtracked in a dramatic fashion. He wrote in a blog post that he does not “have the courage” to publish additional proof, as he promised Wednesday, that he is the elusive creator of the Internet currency. Wright’s initial claims drew widespread skepticism. He said on Wednesday that he would provide verifiable documentation and take additional steps to prove his identity. Instead, he scrubbed his blog clean of past entries and posted a short s...
New York - Those smiley door greeters are back at Wal-Mart. The nation’s largest retailer said in a blog post this week that it’s bringing back door greeters to a majority of its 5,000 stores by mid-summer to improve customer service. For stores which have been selected as higher risks for thefts, Wal-Mart will position a “customer host,” who will not only greet customers but also check receipts to prevent theft. That was flagged as a growing problem last year. Those workers will be trained to help deter potential shoplifters. The rollout follows a successful pilot program. Four years ago, the discounter decided to remove the workers at the front of the store and relocated them to other areas. Greeters were a tradition that its late founder Sam Walton star...
New York - Donald Trump wants to make one thing perfectly clear — he doesn’t cheat at golf. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee also says he has never golfed with retired boxer Oscar De La Hoya, who earlier this week questioned Trump’s integrity on the golf course. “Not only didn’t I cheat, I didn’t play with him,” Trump said. “I have never played a round of golf with this guy.” Trump told The Associated Press on Thursday he respects the game too much to cheat and is good enough to have won a number of club championships. Trump, who owns 18 golf courses, says De La Hoya is lying about him because he wants to sell tickets to a fight he is promoting. Trump said his son, Eric, told him not to respond to De La Hoya&rsqu...
This week’s parshah begins by mentioning the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, Aharon’s two sons. The Torah attests that Aharon silently accepted their deaths with perfect faith (10:3). How did Aharon have the strength to do so? Additionally, what can we learn from his example? Perhaps we can answer this by addressing another, more general question: why did suffering, like the Holocaust, happen to our nation? Furthermore, how could Hashem, Who is completely benevolent in all that He does, allow suffering in this world in general? During the nightmare of World War 2, the accursed Nazis captured R’ Elchonon Wasserman and martyred him. An eyewitness reported the powerful words that R’ Elchonon spoke during those dreadful final days in hiding, when he was asked to explain w...
Trenton, NJ - A Philadelphia woman who was arrested after she refused to answer questions during a traffic stop in New Jersey has sued state police, claiming troopers violated basic rules by arresting her for remaining silent. Rebecca Musarra, an attorney, filed the federal civil rights lawsuit after the Oct. 16 stop on Route 519 near the border with Pennsylvania in Warren County, NJ.com reported (http://bit.ly/21zKGbV ). At least three troopers insisted after she was pulled over that refusing to answer questions was a criminal act, according to the lawsuit. Spokesmen for the state police and the attorney general’s office, which is representing the troopers, declined to comment on the allegations. State police spokesman Capt. Stephen Jones said the department’s inte...
Austin, TX - In finishing the Republican presidential race well ahead of Donald Trump’s other rivals, Ted Cruz is likely to be a leading GOP voice for the foreseeable future. Less clear is whether Cruz harnesses that clout to boost Trump’s White House bid — after all the bad blood between them — or simply solidifies his place as a champion of conservative causes, Senate troublemaker and star of Texas politics. “There’s no question” Cruz remains No. 1 in Texas despite falling to Trump nationally, says political consultant Matt Mackowiak, who’s based in the state. “There’s no bigger draw, there’s no one whose endorsement means more, there’s no one who has a larger organization,” Mackowiak said. “To...
Oswiecim, Poland - Thousands of people from around the world, many draped in Israeli flags, paid homage to the victims of the Holocaust on Thursday with a somber march from the barracks of Auschwitz to nearby Birkenau. Organizers of the March of the Living, held annually on Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, said about 10,000 participated in the event in southern Poland, occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. Among them were about 150 Holocaust survivors, Israel’s justice minister, Knesset members and people from 42 countries who voiced a wide range of emotions: deep grief at the loss of 6 million Jews, joy at the continued existence of the Jewish people and hope that the many young people taking part means the world will continue to remember. “My gran...
Washington - Hundreds of electronic cigarette brands will have to undergo federal review to stay on the market under new rules that have the potential to upend a multi-billion dollar industry attempting to position itself as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday released long-awaited rules that bring the burgeoning industry under federal oversight. The changes will limit e-cigarette sales to minors and require new health warnings. In a shift vigorously opposed by the industry, manufacturers must seek federal permission to continue marketing all e-cigarettes launched since 2007, making up the vast majority of the market. Most companies will have to submit premarket applications that will undergo review to assess their impact on th...
Nairobi, Kenya - Rescuers found four more survivors Thursday in the rubble of an apartment building that collapsed six days ago amid heavy rains in the Kenyan capital, raising hopes that more people might still be alive in a disaster that left 36 dead and dozens missing. One of those rescued was a pregnant woman, although her husband said that amid the joy of finding her alive, doctors also told him that their baby had not survived. Soldiers, firefighters and volunteers have been working around the clock since the April 29 collapse of the seven-story building in a desperate search, and their spirits were lifted first on Tuesday when a nearly 6-month-old girl was found relatively unscathed in a wash basin. Then on Thursday, they pulled three women and a man from the debris, sai...
Washington - House Speaker Paul Ryan is refusing to support Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for president, insisting Thursday that the businessman must do more to unify the GOP. The surprise declaration from Ryan on CNN’s “The Lead” amounted to a stunning rebuke of Trump from the Republican Party’s highest-ranking officeholder. “I’m just not ready to do that at this point. I’m not there right now,” the Wisconsin Republican said. “And I hope to. And I want to, but I think what is required is that we unify this party.” Ryan had maintained his silence since Trump effectively clinched the nomination with a commanding win in Indiana on Tuesday that forced his last two remaining rivals from the race. Other Republican l...
New York, NY - Three weeks after authorizing his 2013 campaign lawyer to work with U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s office in the ongoing corruption investigation that has rocked New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has hired that same attorney to represent him in a federal fundraising probe that has cast shadows on City Hall. de Blasio’s office announced today that Barry Berke, a partner at the Kramer Levin law firm, will be representing the mayor at his own expense, as reported by the Daily News.  Berke is said to be one of the top white collar criminal defense lawyers in the United States and is a former trial lawyer for the Federal Defender’s Office for the Southern District of New York.  The City of New York has also hired the law firms of Debevoise ...
New York, NY - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he’ll sign a bill that imposes a 5-cent fee for single-use plastic bags. The City Council approved the measure Thursday. The Democratic mayor has a goal of sending zero waste to landfills by 2030. Backers hope the fee will reduce pollution and unsightly litter from the billions of plastic bags that New Yorkers dispose of annually. Opponents complain that the fee will amount to a new burden on a heavily taxed population. The law will cover plastic and paper bags given out by grocery stores, drugstores and other retailers. Stores will get to keep the fees they collect, not the city.
New York - U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Thursday by tweeting a photo of himself with a taco bowl and the caption: “I love Hispanics,” but the gesture was not to everyone’s taste. “Happy #CincoDeMayo!” tweeted Trump (@realDonaldTrump). “The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican defeat of the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The posting angered, baffled or amused some social media users, including Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, Trump’s likely opponent in the Nov. 8 election. “‘I love Hispanics!’ —Trump, 52 minutes ago,” Clinton (@HillaryClinton) tweeted. &...
